We will see Kim Minji take on Choi Seungwoo, the big shot in Trench combat, which is too high on his pride. The soldiers are in for a great ride, or at least Minji is with the drill he had been assigned to. However, there was some action in the last chapter that will come up in The Dark Mage’s Return to Enlistment Chapter 39.
Minji once again showed that he isn’t normal by a long shot and has a masochistic outlook on things. But the guy can’t help it, and he had been to another world, being treated as a second-class citizen against his will. He eventually got out of that world and made it back to his, but there were issues.
The monsters from that world had been coming here, and their arrival remains a mystery. Moreover, it has affected all facets of life, which made it hard for the MC to focus on his hobby of gaming. But the military also has some cool things for him to check out as a gamer, and he couldn’t wait any longer to play.
Recap
The Dark Mage’s Return to Enlistment Chapter 38 starts with the soldiers going through a rigorous drill. For the first four to five panels, we see the soldier dreading the exercise and come to an important realization. The realization that their commander does hate them and gets pleasure out of sending them on a masochistic spree.
Everyone was starting to get despondent except Kim Minji, and he was relishing every moment of the training as if it were the time of his life. However, this was also one of the chapters where Kim Minji didn’t get to have much dialogue. The action series focus on this chapter was to give us exposition this time around.
We learn the purpose of the exercise for the soldiers and soon find out that it was about the Trench Combat. It is an old-class fighting competition where the two sides have nothing but their fists or any martial arts they are proficient in. And, of course, the one with the biggest size has the most advantage in the story.
Spoilers
The Dark Mage’s Return to Enlistment Chapter 39 starts with Kim Minji declaring that he will get back at Choi Seungwoo for the insult. The fantasy protagonist had been chill for the entirety of the last chapter, enjoying the training exercise as if it were field training. However, Choi Seungwoo had to come in and ruin the mood, not just his but his fellow soldiers as well.
The main purpose of Trench Combat is to provide recreational exercise and give downtime to soldiers. But as with anything, the exercise had turned into the measurement of worth among the seniors for their entertainment.
However, we will get our entertainment in the upcoming chapter as Kim decides to even the odds by defeating Choi Seungwoo. The big guy will finally get to see what it’s like to lose for once and in front of all.
