Tara Strong Controversy
Amid the Israel-Hamas war, Tara accused Hamas of supporting terrorism by brainwashing the Western world. She liked other controversial tweets related to the war and showed support for Israel. She warned to block the murderers of innocent people right after the war broke out. Tara addressed the religion as a clear danger and equated Hamas with Islam.
Boxtown took to Twitter and announced her termination on 13 October 2023 for her controversial posts over the crisis because it knows how careful it must be while touching sensitive topics. It is how Tara learned about her termination.
According to a tweet made by Tara on 13 October, she helped Boxtown get its Kickstarter money and claimed to get fired for being Jewish. She informed how her family feared for life in Israel.
On 17 October, Boxtown cleared its side by saying it sympathizes with the innocent lives affected during the Israel–Hamas war and hopes for their betterment. Boxtown promised to share details about the substitute cast member shortly.
According to Boxtown’s tweet on 12 October, Tara played Bill, a character in the series, and was paid for her work before termination. A Twitter user reminded everyone that we have freedom of speech but might face worse consequences if we misuse it. Meanwhile, people had diverse thoughts regarding her termination.
Reaction From Twitter Users
Some Twitter users were heartbroken and pledged to never watch Boxtown only for Tara, and some considered it internal politics against Tara, which her fellow voice actors might face in the future.
On the other hand, some Twitter users reminded her that she was terminated for her Islamophobic statements than being Jewish. Meanwhile, some only mocked her for her absurd statement related to her religion than her controversial statement regarding the ongoing crisis.
It is hard to digest that she was terminated for being Jewish because Boxtown still has at least two Jewish staff members. The first is Alex Hirsch, the voice actor who voices the leading character other than Bill in the show, and the second is Spencer Rothbell, the writer.
Twitter users accused Tara of creating and liking Islamophobic posts regarding the Israel–Hamas war. Later, Tara claimed that she liked and supported such posts because she did not read them carefully. However, she unliked the tweets after reading them carefully and before claiming she loves everyone but terrorists.
It teaches us how careful we must be with our activities on social media. Tara mentioned how quick internet users judge someone. In response, Boxtown claimed to ask its cast and crew members to be careful while reacting to sensitive topics.
