Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel make the ideal couple, but not everyone once agreed. They may have posted on social media for the first time as a couple when Zooey posted a picture of them together when they first started dating. Jonathan can still remember the first comment that was made on the picture, which was something like, “Why is she dating one of the Property Brothers?” He replied in jest, “Hey, that’s rude!”
“Why wouldn’t I want to be with you?” says Deschanel, 43. She continues by saying that although they have very compatible personalities, their upbringings are very different.
It’s evident why they make such a fantastic couple as they speak with PEOPLE at their new Los Angeles home in their first interview since their unexpected engagement in August: they are perfectly in tune with one another, full of fun teasing and affectionate smiles.
The pair, who have been together for more than four years, think there is another crucial component that contributes to the success of their relationship. Deschanel declares with pride, “Just so you know, we consider ourselves nerds.” And their shared past unquestionably backs up that assertion.

Their first date took them to an escape room, which also happened to be one of Scott’s favorite activities after they first met while filming an episode of Carpool Karaoke, where they sang a combination of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and “Baby One More Time,” a song made famous by Zooey Deschanel’s performance in the movie Elf.
Deschanel makes it clear that she had never tried it before and that he had previously said how much he enjoyed escape rooms. She continues by saying that it seemed like something she would actually enjoy, and she became interested in it right away. She acknowledges that her first try at an escape room puzzle didn’t exactly go well, but she has improved since then.
Scott scored a big point by sending her a plan for the evening in advance. “This is perfect for me,” she exclaimed, expressing her pleasure. My sign is Capricorn.

They fully committed to matching costumes, dressing as Batman and Catwoman, during their first large family reunion a few months later, which happened to be the Halloween wedding of Jonathan’s older brother J.D.
Jonathan made his first love confession in a wonderfully quirky situation. At the Magic Castle, a magicians-only club where Scott is a member, they were taking in a show. Even though they might be amusing, they also have similar career goals.
She has also made guest appearances on his well-liked HGTV show, Celebrity IOU, and he has made unexpected visits at her She & Him Christmas shows. She has also been highlighted on the Scott brothers’ website, drewandjonathan.com, which they just rebuilt as a venue for exclusive behind-the-scenes content and makeover tales, among other things.
Scott does admit that he has found someone really wonderful, though. He acknowledges that he did not anticipate this. Deschanel, according to him, actually cares about assisting him in getting through challenging circumstances.
Deschanel and Scott have both been married before, and she is the mother of two kids from her former marriage with producer Jacob Pechenik, Elsie (8) and Charlie (6). Scott exclaims with enthusiasm that he is a “bonus dad” and continues, “They now have even more people who care for them.”
Deschanel adds that their family is deeply connected and wonderfully blended.
