C2C studios will be finally airing the much-awaited adventure series Shangri-La Frontier. The manga series published by Kodansha managed to bag the 47th Kodansha Manga Award earlier this year, so it’s going to be exciting to see if C2C will be able to portray this series just as well.
The storyline of Shangri-La Frontier centers on Rakuro Hizutome, a gamer who has a strange attraction to games that are full of glitches and faults. This series takes place in an era where normal on-screen video games are considered “retro,” and the actual popular or widely used way of gaming is the ever-so-immersive VR.
Rakuro manages to become an expert in these trash games, as they usually are much harder to complete because of the glitches.
When he finally decides to play a great game full of stunning fights and intriguing characters, Rakuro finds his skills from playing those useless games finally coming in handy. Shangri-La Frontier even has a real-life videogame that was developed by Netmarble in 2022.
After being inspired by virtual reality and reincarnation stories, Katarina came out with the web novel in May 2017. Although the Shangri-La Frontier novel was never published, its manga adaptation started being published by Kodansha in Weekly Shonen Magazine, which is where most of the audience of this adventure series found out about it.
Shangri-La Frontier: About The Anime
Shangri-La Frontier was announced to be in the making by C2C in July 2022. With Toshiyuki Kubooka (Berserk, Handyman Saito) as the director, this anime will be made available on all of JNN’s stations.
Set in the future, Shangri-La Frontier shows us the life of Rakuro Hizutome, a skilled gamer who’s always looking forward to clearing those unplayable and faulty VR games that everyone seems to overlook. His most recent obsession, Faeria Chronicle Online, was so bad that it left him feeling burnt out.
That’s when the owner of RockRoll, the place where Rakuro buys games from, recommends him the newest and most popular game called “Shangri-La Frontier.” Rakuro thinks that playing a good game once in a while won’t hurt, but when he starts playing this adventure-action game, he realizes just how absorbing it is.
Rakuro quickly creates his character, Sunraku, who will be the one fighting and moving forward in Shangri-La Frontier’s storyline. A trash game expert is much better at these mainstream games, as achieving a high score or completing those glitchy games is a difficult task. We’ll be seeing Sunraku travel through the interesting world of Shangri-La Frontier and make some powerful friends along the way.
The voice actors that’ll be a part of Shangri-La Frontier are Yuma Uchida as Sunraku, Azumi Waki voicing Psyger 0, Yoko Hikasa voicing Arthur Pencilgon, Makoko Koichi voicing Oikatzo and Emul being voiced by Rina Hidaka. The big and intimidating Viceash will be voiced by Akio Otsuka.
Yuma Uchida, who voiced the main character, has previously been the voice behind Megumi from Jujutsu Kaisen, Kyo Sohma from Fruits Basket, and Ash Lynx from Banana Fish.
