MGM+ dropped a docuseries covering the gruesome trajectory of crimes of Ed Gein, a sickly and disturbed psychopath whose crimes served as the inspiration for all sorts of stories in popular culture.
Instead of dramatizing his life, MGM+ and the filmmakers took it upon themselves to narrate to us the story of the real police investigation of the man, his acts, as well as the analysis and commentary of forensic psychologists, police officers, and those who were involved in tracking him down.
This miniseries of true crime is not for the faint of heart; if topics like mutilation, abuse, murder, torture, and sexual abuse are sensitive to you, I strongly suggest you skip this one because you will feel triggered without any doubt.
Still, if you have a passion for true crime, then this one will be one you don’t want to miss. With two episodes aired so far, here’s what you should know about this program.
Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein Episode 2 Recap
In Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein, we’re taken into the inner workings of the mind of a serial killer and grave robber who later became the inspiration for several classic horror films.
What’s interesting about this one, is that instead of dramatizing his crimes, we get to listen, much in the fashion of other serial killers and psychopaths his actual tapes where he recounts his twisted versions of his crimes.
Serial killers and psychopaths have a knack for narcissistic traits in which they like to boast the damage they inflict upon others: John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, Dennis Rader, the BTK killer, all have done it, and in the case of Ed Gein, that’s no exception.
Episode two chronicles in gruesome detail in tapes he recorded how he terrorized a bunch of people across a decade, leaving a wake of at least dead people.
In the episodes, we not only hear his chilling voice, but that is also accompanied by commentary from psychiatrists, forensic experts, and top-level analysts in these matters that tell us how a man can commit these things, and it also delves into how these nasty things were the inspiration for cultural products that are stapled to the horror genre in films: Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” Rob Zombie’s “The Devil’s Rejects”, Jonathan Demme’s Academy Award-winner “The Silence of the Lambs” are among many cultural productions that have a loose inspiration in the actions of this man.
