The animated fantasy sitcom called Disenchantment recently dropped its fifth season, and we are here to tell you all about it. This American sitcom was released on Netflix much like its previous seasons, so make sure to stay till the end to read Disenchantment’s season 5 ending explained.
Created by the comedy genius Matt Groening, also the creator of other successful sitcoms like The Simpsons and Futurama, Disenchantment is one of his first creations to be available on Netflix. With a total of five seasons in its pocket, the show has become immensely popular among fans who enjoy the show’s charming wit and humor.
The show has Abbi Jacobson, Eric Andre, Nat Faxon, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, Matt Berry, David Herman, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, and many others voicing the leading and supporting characters of the show.
The show takes us into medieval times, to a fantasy land, the European kingdom of Dreamland, where we are introduced to Princess Bean, an alcoholic adventurer and a rebel at heart, who has her own personal fantastical creatures, a demon named Luci, and an elf named Elfo.
Over the five seasons of the show, we get a glimpse into the life of Princess Bean and her adventures while exploring Dreamland and the kingdoms around it. Oh, and we also apparently unveil a mythical secret, so make sure to stay till the end of the journey.
The plot is unique to the show, and the makers have surely experimented a lot with their rebellious princess characters. The series, though according to many, falls short of good jokes and a crisp storyline, has not only found for itself a fanbase but has also garnered much positive response from them.
Let us get into the plot of season five of the show and all that went down in its finale.
Disenchantment Season 5 Ending Explained
With the end of the previous season, we knew that decisions would have to be made and that Bean’s life would not be the same. In the last season, Bean was put in a conundrum where she had to decide whether she would let her evil mother, Dagmar, take over the kingdom to do whatever she wanted with it, or she would stay loyal to her kingdom and save it.
This new season was all about addressing Bean’s messed-up family and resolving the issues they shared. For starters, Bean saved her dad from a weird situation he seemed to be stuck in. The pair meet each other in Streamland and get into a hot air balloon to escape the freakish place.
They finally get time to address their bad father-daughter relationship as they fly toward the kingdom of Maru. It takes time for them to get things right, and their misadventures continue throughout their journey. The good thing is that the land of Maru had Queen Prudence who, thankfully enough, teaches Bean how to control her superpowers.
But since it is Bean’s life, things obviously cannot go right all the time. Soon, she becomes aware of a prophecy that warns her of her future actions where she might end up ending a loved one’s life. As we saw in the previous season, Bad Bean and actual Bean had gotten into something of a battle, where Bean had come on top.
Turns out Queen Dagmar did not give up on her Bad Bean card and was still busy in a corner putting the ruined Bad Bean’s head and body together in hopes of pitting the two against each other once more. Her wish is granted as Bad Bean comes alive and breathing, ready to face Bean again.
The Prophecy Comes True
Right at the time, Bean, her father, and Mora come back to Dreamland and enter the castle, when another epic battle between Bean and Bad Bean takes place. The prophecy that Bean had been told about back in Streamland comes true during this battle as Bean gets trapped by Bad Bean’s tactics and ends up cutting Mora’s head off.
Mora’s death is enough to create so much rage inside of Bean that her powers get dialed to a hundred, giving her enough power to end Bad Bean forever. Despite the immediate revenge, the fact that Mora is gone cannot be changed, leading Bean into a slump where she wishes to do nothing, let alone save her kingdom.
Luci, the demon, uses her demonic ways to somehow convince Satan, Bean’s stepfather, that once Queen Dagmar takes over the kingdom, they will be able to have a better relationship, and she will take him seriously. This was a part of Luci’s plan of saving the kingdom, but it all goes to hell when Dagmar ends up killing Luci by throwing her in burning lava.
But Luci’s death does not go to complete waste because upon reaching heaven, he, by full mistake of his, kills God. Sounds horrific, yes, but he also manages to revive him, which leads God to grant him one wish.
He could have asked for his life back, but this angelic demon wished that God would bring Mora back to life, knowing that would bring the will to save the kingdom back into Bean. Upon finding Mora alive, Bean found in her twice the will to fight back.
A Final Face-Off
And with her powers doubled, she charges toward the Queen into a Crystal Cave, a tunnel under the castle. Turns out this is the place where Dagmar had been prepping for immortality, which meant that no matter how much Bean would fight her mother or slice her into pieces, it would be difficult to defeat her.
After a long battle with her mother, Bean is finally able to get her by causing the caves to come crashing down on her, trapping her there as Satan comes and agrees to take her back into the depths of hell. But with the way Dagmar was with him, Satan kept her captured in a small cage just outside of his own castle.
With the evil Queen gone forever and King Zog returning to the jungle to be with Ursula, the question arises: Who will sit on the throne? While you would think that the realization would suddenly dawn on Bean that she should take over the kingdom since she fought for it and because she would be a good leader, nothing of the sort happens.
The Ending Explained
The show had established right from the start that our girl, Bean, was a traveler at heart and had no desire to sit on any throne. So the epilogue shows us that she lets Elfo and Mop Girl take care of the kingdom and do what they will with it.
Bean was happy living her life with Mora, and that is what she finally got. The ending is amazing in the sense that we got to have a princess fight for a kingdom, but she also did not forget what she had always wanted.
Unlike most shows, this time, our main lead did not want to be the chosen one. Instead, she wanted to run away from all responsibilities to live her rebellious life on her terms. The end was definitely one that many preferred over the cliched finale, where Bean would have taken over the throne, and that would have been it.
While her destiny seemed to want her to have the throne, Bean, acting according to her personality, decided to choose her own fate, which was being with Mora and living a happy life.
