Inspired by the original South Korean series of the same name, the American version of the show, The Good Doctor, starring actor Freddie Highmore is a popular medical drama with unique selling points. While there is a lot to say about the show, we will tell you more about why and when the on-screen couples, Shaun and Carly, break up.
Based on Park Jae Bum’s Good Doctor, the show has actors Hill Harper, Christina Chang, Richard Schiff, Will Yun Lee, Paige Spara, Noah Galvin, and many others in recurring and supporting roles. The show’s makers had to be extra special even before the shooting began, considering the show revolves around an autistic doctor.
Actor Freddie Highmore plays the role of Shaun Murphy, who is portrayed as this autistic surgical resident who is not liked by his colleagues all that much, though they slowly warm up to him over the seasons. He possesses an extraordinary ability of photographic memory along with some seriously advanced attention to detail.
Most of the show revolves around how Shaun deals with his troubled past and adjusts in the San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Much like all of the other medical shows, this one also has drama, a pinch of romance, and a lot of sad deaths.
The audience and critics remain divided on whether the show is good or not. To many, The Good Doctor is a heartwarming series following the lives and struggles of the workers of St. Bonaventure Hospital, but there are some who feel that the way the character of Shaun Murphy has been portrayed is too superficial and ‘gimmicky’.
Despite such divided opinions, the series has been going strong, with the makers even confirming a seventh season, which will go under production soon. Now that we have covered the tip of the iceberg, let us dive into the story of Shaun and Carly and when their relationship on screen was put to an end.
When Do Shaun And Carly Break Up?
Shaun Murphy, played by Freddie Highmore, and Dr. Carly Lever, played by Jasika Nicole, were a couple during the early seasons of the show. Though their relationship did not last for all that long, as the two broke up with each other officially in Season 3 Episode 16, there were a few hoping that they would continue to be together for a long time.
While the two had a short but good run, it was during the fifteenth episode that the end of their relationship was put in motion. During a double date at the karaoke with Lea and her boyfriend, it is Carly realizes that Shaun might have feelings for something more than just a crush on Lea.
It is obvious to her that both Shaun and Lea might even be in love with each other, though the two seem to be in denial about this. Actress Jasika Nicole revealed that this breakup between Carly and Shaun felt personal to her and that she was immensely affected by it as well.
The two do not get their happy-ever-after moment, as in episode fifteen, Carly sits with Shaun and tells him to confess his feelings to Lea. She saw the two at the karaoke and realized that they were meant to be together and that she should part ways with Shaun for the good of both of them.
It hurts not just Carly but also the audience to see her push her own boyfriend to be with the person he actually truly loves, but it also adds so much depth to Carly’s character. The breakup scene really showed Carly’s maturity in accepting the truth, even forcing Shaun to finally face the truth.
Their break up gave way to another romance line, this time between Lea and Shaun, one that the makers turned quite serious and real. So if you are curious to know more about what happens between this new couple, then we suggest you grab some popcorn and start streaming the show.
