Rurouni Kenshin: What Is The Anime About?
Rurouni Kenshin, also known as the Wandering Samurai and Samurai X, is about Kenshin Himura, a samurai who became a legend during the Meiji Era. Kenshin Himura, also known as Battousai the Manslayer, was a sword prodigy who mercilessly slashed down the enemies from the shadows during the Meiji Revolution that, gave rise to the new government system in Japan.
The feared and legendary assassin retired after the Revolution, wandering for 10 years after vowing never to use his sword to kill a human ever again.
The once-feared Manslayer now wielded a reverse-blade sword in order to keep his vow never to harm a person again. Kenshin’s philosophy in life was twisted yet simple – he wanted to repent for taking so many lives, even if it was for the greater good.
Kenshin’s motto was to live by the sword and die by the sword, but he still didn’t want to go back to being the Manslayer he was in his past. The story is a heartwarming yet tear-jerking journey about a man’s will to repent and his way to salvation, although Kenshin time and again showed that he knew it was not possible.
As a wanderer, Kenshin never stayed in one place for a long time, but it all changed when he met the spunky and lively Kaoru. As the new head of the Kamiya Dojo that she inherited from her late father, Kaoru wanted to spread her father’s Kamiya Kasshin Style of Swordsmanship to the masses.
The Kamiya Dojo believed in wielding the sword in order to protect others, not to kill. That was an ideology that Kenshin wanted to believe in but thought of as nothing but a child’s dream. Even so, Kenshin wanted to follow that way, especially after meeting Kaoru.
