The Wonder Years is an original ABC sitcom narrated by Don Cheadle and developed by Saladin K. Patterson that takes inspiration from a series that had the same name and ran in the late 1980s. This version has a spin; while the original one was about a group of white kids and their families, this one takes us to Montgomery, Alabama, and centers around a black family, the Williams, as they navigate the ups and downs of life in that community in the 1960s and 1970s.
This program’s nostalgic nature doesn’t sacrifice any aspect of historical context. Despite it being a comedy, we’ll see how hard life was for African American families at a moment when the Civil Rights movement was in full swing, transforming the way and forms in which black citizens in the Deep South lived, laughed, cried, and loved.
