The film focuses on John as he resists the robot uprising led by Skynet. The film begins in the year 2029 with Earth getting ravaged by the tussle between the malicious artificial intelligence Synet. To prevent the resistance caused by the civilization, Skynet sends an advanced, Terminator known as T-1000 to end the life of their leader as a child. Now, the need for someone to protect the young John arises. Thus, the resistance sends T-800 Terminator, a reprogrammed and less advanced metal endoskeleton.
T-1000 is made of an indestructible liquid metal designed specially to end a young John. The Terminators travel back to 1995 in Los Angeles, where the viewers meet Sarah, John’s mother, who was kept at the Pescadero State Hospital. Sarah was incarcerated for her violent and maniacal efforts to prevent the prophesied event of Judgement Day. On Judgement Day, it is prophesied that Skynet will gain the ability to feel, and in response to the Terminators gaining sentience, its creators will attempt to deactivate it by inciting a nuclear holocaust.
Meanwhile, Sarah’s son is undertaken by his foster parents, who resent his mother for being delusional and preparing John for his role as the resistance leader in the future. T-800 and T-1000 connect with John at a convenience store, thus beginning the game of cat and mouse chase. John escapes with T-800 as he calls his foster parents to warn them. At that moment, T-800 makes the heart-breaking revelation to John that his foster parents have already been unlived by T-1000.
John soon realizes that T-800 is programmed to obey his order. John commands him to protect Sarah from T-1000, forbidding him from killing anyone. T-80 and John attempts to free Sarah, but Sarah flees in horror and escapes from them as T-800 resembles the robot sent to kill her back in 1984. After persuasion from her son and T-800, Sarah agrees to join them as they escape from T-1000 high in their tails.
Sarah uses T-800’s knowledge to gain crucial information about a microprocessor being crucial for Skynet’s creation. The microprocessor is being developed by Miles Dyson. During their journey, Sarah begins to notice that T-800 serves as a father figure and friend to John. Sarah plans to escape with John and start a new life in Mexico until she has yet another nightmare about Judgement Day. She convinces herself to end Dysin to prevent the microprocessor from being made, so as the next step, she breaks into Dyson’s house and attempts to kill him. Sarah soon realizes she cannot kill Dyson. Thus, she relents and returns from there.
T-800 alongside, John convinces Dyson of the damage his invention will cause in the future. Dyson believing his work needs to be destroyed for the betterment of humanity, detonates the explosives, thus ending himself. Meanwhile, T-1000 continues on his pursuit of chasing the surviving trio. The trio decides to split after T-1000 briefly deactivates T-800 by destroying its power source. In order to lure John out of hiding, T-1000 assumes John’s mother’s appearance.
Sarah and a reactivated T-800 intervene and protect John while T-800 disintegrates T-1000.
