The beloved show, She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat receives an exciting second season, scheduled to release in 2024. The first season concluded in December 2022 with a total of ten episodes, and NHK revealed the second season would consist of twenty episodes.
This heartwarming and endearing live-action show is based on a manga of the same name. The manga, written and illustrated by Sakaomi Yuzaki, follows the romantic story of two women, one who loves to cook and another who loves to eat. Owing to the success of the first season, we can expect the upcoming addition to deliver an equally good, if not better, watch.
She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat celebrates the universal language of food and how it brings people together, irrespective of differences. Claiming the second position on Takarajimasha’s “Kono Manga ga Sugoi!” list for best manga of 2022 for women readers, the series continues to captivate readers with its engaging story. To add to that, it ranked 12th in 2021 and 13th in 2022 in the “Web Category” of the Next Manga Awards. Let’s see what this series is all about.

When Did the Series Debut?
First things first, She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat is a popular Japanese web manga series created by Sakaomi Yuzaki. The manga has been serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s digital manga magazine Comic It since January 2021.
The series initially gained recognition through Yuzaki’s Twitter and Pixiv accounts in March 2020 before being officially published. The manga has been collected 3 volumes as of November 2022, with the first volume released on June 15, 2021. In March 2022, Yen Press announced the licensing of the series for an English release in North America.
Then, from November to December 2022, the 10-episode live-action drama adaptation was aired on NHK General TV. Increasing fans’ excitement, NHK announced the making of a second season.
The cast will be making a comeback for the second season with Manami Higa playing Yuki Nomoto (the girl who loves to cook) and Emi Nishino playing Totoko Kasuga (the girl who loves to eat). The live-action is written by Yuri Yamada, accompanied by Goro Ito, who composed the music.
What is the Series About?
Cooking is Nomoto’s ultimate stress reliever, a sanctuary where she finds solace. One day, she overcooks and has no idea what to do with the excess food. Not wanting her efforts to go to waste, she invites her neighbor for dinner, and Kasuga, who also resides alone, accepts the invite.
Little did they know that this spontaneous act of generosity would spark something romantic, creating a lasting bond between the two individuals brought together by the love for food. As their shared table becomes a regular occurrence, a beautiful relationship blossoms, filled with laughter, heartfelt conversations, and an endearing story we love to experience.
Worth a Watch?
Japan can always make food dramas feel so homey, cozy, and real. The attention to small details and small moments between the characters, the panning shots of the plates, and the soft atmosphere will always deliver a feel-good experience. She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat is more of a lesbian adult coming-of-age drama rather than an up-front lesbian romance.
“The story beautifully explores the changing relationship between two women who discover their perfect complement in each other,” said a reviewer. It throws away the common narrative of a romantic relationship and, instead, breaks down the importance of more than platonic moments and how it builds a strong, loving bond between people.
The pace of character development is intriguing, starting from shyness and insecurity to understanding and becoming irreplaceable to each other. From eating meals alone to sharing food with her neighbor, we see how a relationship strengthens from seemingly innocent moments. We’re sure the second season will explore the relationship even more.
