Hypnotic Premise
Hypnotic begins with Detective Danny, in Austin Police Department, recalling the incident of his daughter’s abduction, which resulted in the dissolution of his happy marriage to his therapist. After Danny’s therapy session, Nick, his partner, picks him up and informs him about an anonymous tip-off call that a bank’s safe deposit box will be robbed. Once at the scene, Danny and his partner witness a mysterious man entering and giving instructions to the employees and policemen in the bank.
These people listen to his instructions and follow the commands he gives them. As Danny rushes to the targeted safe box to prevent the robbery, he finds a picture of his daughter with the instruction to find Lev Dellrayne on opening the box. Danny chases the mysterious man to the rooftop, where he witnesses the man giving the two policemen the instruction to shoot each other, and they follow through.
Danny is convinced that the heist and the disappearance of his daughter have some connection to each other. Thus, he begins his investigation. Danny reaches a fortune teller after trace run Nick after he receives a tip-off. Danny describes the mysterious man from the bank to the fortune teller; meanwhile, a client of Diane drives a motorcycle through Diane’s window before killing himself. It is revealed the man was under the mysterious man’s control.
Danny takes Diane under his protection, and she begins to tell him the mysterious man is Lev Dellrayne, a trained hypnotist by a secretive government. As the film moves forward, it is revealed Danny is immune to hypnotics after Diane tries to get him under her influence. Lev commands Nick to shoot Danny outside the police station, where Diane ends up shooting Nick in self-defense.
To further investigate, Diane and Danny flee to Mexico, where they get in contact with Jeremiah, a former division contact, who reveals to them that Lev is on a quest to seek Domino, a powerful weapon that was developed by the Division. He hid the division while escaping, and now Lev is back to seek it as he wiped his memory and left behind triggers to figure out Domino’s location.
The twist occurs after Jeremiah reveals himself to be Lev, but Danny escapes with Diane after he taps into his hypnotic power. Danny and Cruz get in contact with River, a Divison hacker who discovers Danny’s wife. In a series of events, it gets revealed Diane is Danny’s wife Vivian, and that Domino, the powerful weapon, is their daughter. Another twist happens when it gets revealed that Danny escapes with his daughter Minnie from the division to prevent her from becoming a weapon.
Danny hid Minnie and then wiped his memory, thus no longer remembering his daughter’s whereabouts. The Division has been putting him in different constructs to find Minnie, and after the revelations, the Division puts Danny in another construct. The construct is the same as the one the viewers saw at the film’s start with Danny talking to his therapist, but this time the Divison figures out that Lev Dellraynne isn’t a person but a location where Danny’s foster parents are hiding their granddaughter.
Danny reaches his foster parent’s ranch and reunites with Minnie, who has grown older now. Another twist occurs when the Division surrounds Danny’s parent’s ranch after Minnie restores her mother’s memory, where it gets revealed she was part of the escape plan of Danny and Minnie. Minnie controls the minds of the Divison and commands them to kill each other, thus freeing themselves from the control of the division. The film ends with the revelation of Lev surviving the shootout and constructing a look-alike of Danny’s foster father.
