The Broken Ring: This Marriage Will Fail Anyway Recap
In the previous chapter, we saw Raul threatening Alfonso by saying that it wouldn’t take much time to kill him and that their lord, Carcel, wouldn’t mind him doing so, as the butler had bad-mouthed lord’s lover. But Alfonso threatens Raul to tell Ines to reveal her mental illness to Carcel cause if he doesn’t, he will.
The scene shifts to a banquet held for some navy admiral. Carcel and Ines arrived, and the superior officers came to get Carcel, who had initially told Ines he would stick to her side. Ines claims she was glad he was called by the marquess away because she didn’t want him to stick to her side. She claims she hopes he will mingle with the women and find a partner among the ladies there. Still, she was perpetually trying to locate him visually. She realized for a moment that she was acting like a jealous wife. But she denied this to herself and said it was more like she worried he wouldn’t cheat.
While looking for a view of Carcel, she overhears two envious navy guys disparaging Carcel. They’re jealous of Carcel’s achievements in the Navy, such as his early graduation from the academy. Regular guys take 7 – 8 years to graduate, while Carcel takes only three years. He had graduated from the academy at 19.
The men also make a few more taunting remarks about Carcel, implying that they think he’s pretending to be humble because he outranks all the men there, including his superiors, regarding status. They said many other insulting things about Carcel, and Ines grew upset.
She observes that if people don’t see a person achieve their accomplishments, they don’t believe them and resort to gossip like the two men who imply Carcel’s promotions were unreasonable. In a nutshell, the men think Carcel is unfairly recognized in the Navy and by their superiors. The men took it into personal territory when they began gossiping about the subject of Carcel and how women are attracted to him.
Anyway, Ines gets upset after hearing all this to the point that she realizes she can ignore it all, but for some reason, she wants to destroy the two men. So she sees the womanizer officer, Verbeek, and asks him the two men’s identity, rank, and squadron. She wants to report them for speaking ill about their superiors. In institutions like the Navy, army, etc., respect for authority is always important regardless of era.
The men mentioned Carcel was demoted from active duty to the supplies section, probably because he violated a rule in the Navy, even if it was for the good of his fellow navy officers. That’s how those institutions work, where rules and orders must be obeyed and observed.
Ines also spoke of Admiral Calderon, who is Carcel’s grandfather. He is revered as something close to god in the Navy and Calztela. The jewelry shop owner also mentioned Admiral Calderon. Ines thinks Carcel is a good officer who’s following his grandfather’s path and that everything those men said stemmed from their jealousy.
