Gordon was born on November 17, 1938, in Orillia, Ontario. His parents ran a local dry cleaning business, and they were known as Jessie Vick Trill Lightfoot and Gordon Lightfoot Sr. He only had one sibling, a sister named Beverley. To say that Gordon has a musical talent from a very young age would be an understatement.
Gordon was musically gifted, and this gift was recognized by Jessie, who took the necessary steps to hone his skills and develop his talent. His first public performance was in grade four, where he sang the Irish-American lullaby “Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral” and got a lot of praise for it.
Gordon was also part of the choir of Orillia’s St. Paul’s United Church, where he practiced his talent under the direction of choirmaster Ray Williams. He has always given credit to Ray for teaching him the confidence that he needed to go forward on the path of singing. Due to this, he won a competition and made his debut at Massey Hall in Toronto, which would be a big part of his career later.
