The Brokenwood Mysteries is one of my favorite shows, and this ninth season doesn’t let me down. If you haven’t heard of this New Zealander show, it’s a crime procedural drama about a weird detective named Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd who moves from the big city to a tiny community in rural New Zealand and solves mysterious homicides there.
Shepherd is helped by Constable Kristin Sims, a cynical and funny detective who gives Shepherd her thoughts on each case. This series has a lot of tense moments, funny conversations, and Kiwi slang. It also has Neill Rea, Fern Sutherland, and Nic Sampson, who are all great actors.
Each episode is carefully made with its own unique storyline and twists that keep us coming back for more. Each episode also has beautiful scenery, so the show keeps giving us lots to talk about. So, if you like crime procedural shows but haven’t seen this one yet, I’d recommend it because it has a style that’s different from most.
The Brokenwood Mysteries Season 9 Episode 3 Recap
This episode begins with the death of a nun in front of a church; Shepherd and Kristin banter about the dedication and service of female clergy members, only to be interrupted by a nun scolding Kristin for the personal choices of nuns. Then, the investigative team interrogates the head nun, who insists on saying that Sister Angelica, the dead nurse, wasn’t harmed by anyone in the convent. When the detectives ask the head nun to talk to the rest of the congregation, they find out that most of the other nuns took a vow of silence.
The crime scene investigation team picks up clues on the dead nun, and Kristin shares those findings with the other detectives. Then, she moves to Sister Angelica’s room and has an uncomfortable chat with the head nun. Kristin finds a phone number jotted on a piece of paper, dials the number, and a male voice answers and hangs up. Later on, the detective team brainstorms possible motives and is interrupted by the coroner. It turns out Sister Angelica is covered in tattoos, and the rope that killed her is inconsistent with the bruises on her neck.
More Clues
Chalmers questions a priest and members of the congregation, while Shepherd and Kristin ask the head nun a few more questions, only to find evasive questions that make it more suspicious as her accounts contradict other nun’s accounts of the events of the day. Then, Kristin talks to the groundskeeper, who tells her he saw Sister Angelica beating up a biker and punching another nun a few days before her death.
Kristin examines a shed, takes some dirt samples, and discovers a hidden cell phone. Chalmers interrogates more people and comes up with a possible suspect, a man who Angelica got fired. When the cops ask the head nun about the phone, she dismisses the questions. When the tech team tells the cops that the cell phone belongs to the nun Angelica beat up, they question her and find out that the nun was using the phone when she died.
Contradictions Here And There
After more rounds of questioning without success, Shepherd follows a nun to question her and discovers that another nun has similar tattoos to Angelica’s and that her cincture is stained. When asked about it, she says that the day Angelica died she was cleaning it. Then, the coroner tells Kristin that Angelica’s tattoos are indicative of a popular rock band and that on the day she died, she had smoked marijuana.
As it turns out, the dude Angelica beat up was a drug dealer who had a beef with her over some drug deal gone sour. The biker dude spills the beans and after more questioning, the nuns reveal that the dude who killed Angelica was an employee of a nursing home who had a beef with Angelica for covering after her fellow nuns.
