Why was 1899 Got Canceled?
What was the reason that makers have to cancel 1899? Why did Netflix cancel 1899? Let’s find out. Paul Tassi wrote in Forbes about the cancellation and said, “I feel like Netflix is almost actively stealing my time from me. It’s frankly exhausting, and if it’s this exhausting for viewers, I have to imagine it’s ten times as much for showrunners and actors. Netflix is becoming a graveyard stacked with dead series with unfinished conclusions. Something has to change.”
David Opie, in an interview with Digital Spy, wrote and said, “For all we know, there might be talks to save the show at HBO or Prime Video, plus there’s a small chance that Netflix themselves might try and wrap things up in a one-off special or movie. That’s exactly what happened after fans decried Netflix’s decision to cancel Sense8 a few years back [that is also an international genre show].”
But why did so? As inferred from above, the makers are pretty upset about the decision of Netflix. The show was canceled in January 2023. When the news broke out that 1899 will get canceled, it shook the streaming industry. The makers of 1899 are the ones who created Dark which is streaming on Netflix, so fans didn’t quite catch the reason behind the cancellation.

The makers also announced that they would love to end the show with another two seasons as they did with Dark, but it got canceled beforehand. The show as we know starts well and introduces us to all the main characters. The first few episodes deal well with creating suspense. It was clear that something is going on with the ship, and it is not good. But later, as the series progressed, too many other stories and mysteries got overlapped.
For example, the story of the pyramid, the memories, the green bug, the boy, and the ship itself. All these stories got mixed up. This made fans confused. It felt like the mystery will be solved, but again in every episode, we would be introduced to another mystery.
Over its episode, the show lost its charm because there was no change in the tone of the narration. Fans got bored with the monotonous tone of the series. Netflix made this harsh decision to cancel the show.
