Kiku and Mahiru are dead. Yes, that’s it; the last chapter has now confirmed that both of them have indeed died while holding each other. Fans have come up with many theories to solve this tear-jerking moment and we’ll tell you the most acceptable theory.
The most accepted theory is that when Kiku bit Mahiru, she turned into a human while Mahiru turned into a vampire. As vampires can’t stay in sunlight, Mahiru started disintegrating while Kiku’s age started catching up to her and she died due to aging.
Now that this love story has met a tragic end, Kou and others will have to move forward with their lives as Kiku and Mahiru wished. Kou has returned from his adventure and will tell everyone about this incident he witnessed in the next chapter, “welcome back”.
Yofukashi no uta chapter 164 “Curse”: Recap
This chapter continues after Mahiru and Kiku go to see the sunrise which ended in tears. We see the first encounter between Kiku and Mahiru and how they came to know each other. Kiku is out walking on the streets when she suddenly hears cries for help to call an ambulance as there has been an accident nearby.
Kiku walks up to the scene and inquires about the issue when she finds out that apparently, a kid has been hit by a car because he ran out in the open. The kid’s mother is crying seeing her son’s condition but his brother is standing at a distance with a blank face. The people surrounding the area show their support for the family.
Kiku recognises the little brother as the kid from the other day. She walks up to him and hands him an umbrella saying that he’ll catch a cold if he stays in the rain. It was just a whim but Kiku wanted to do something good for once. The little kid, Mahiru asks Kiku a very random question when people die, do they become more important than those still alive?
Kiku gets startled but Mahiru continues by saying that why does his mother only talk about his dead brother when he’s still here? Kiku asks him to wait while she thinks of an answer to such a strange question. She says that she’s not very smart and so she needs to make sure her answers are good. She thinks and thinks for a long time and finally comes up with an answer.
Kiku says that people don’t become more important when they die and the reaction of his mother must have been because of the shock she went through but that doesn’t give Mahiru the right to make her feel lonely. She asks him if he loves his Mom but he refuses which makes Kiku think of how foolish humans are.
Kiku tells Mahiru that it is okay to hate other people including your parents because ultimately they are also other people. But it’s tiring to keep hating people because it will hurt him in the long and so he should probably reach a point of Apathy. The rain stops and Kiku starts to walk away when Mahiru tries to ask her name but Kiku makes fun of him for trying to pick up girls.
Kiku tells Mahiru to ask her name once he has grown up into a fine young man. The focus then shifts to Kiku and Mahiru lying on the shore slowly disintegrating when Mahiru asks her if she was happy and she says yes then they both turn to dust. Kou witnesses this even from a distance.
