Where Was The Last Of Us Filmed? A question on countless minds. Hence, we dedicate this article to helping the readers with the answers. Since the release of the series based on the chart-topping gaming series, The Last Of Us, viewers have been crazy about it. With The Last Of Us, HBO once again proved why it is the best streaming service worldwide.
Season 1, Episode 9, is just a few hours away, and we will have to wait for probably more than a year for a new season. Every setting in The Last Of Us was heartfelt, and well, my view could be a little biased because of my unwavering devotion to the game, Pedro Pascal (as Joel Miller), and Bella Ramsey (as Ellie Williams). The series brought an utterly new apocalyptic situation – fungus rather than a virus.
The series has an average rating of 9.1 on IMDb, with 7.4 being the current lowest for the episode Left Behind. Though the setup is based in the USA, the filming was primarily done in Canada. Without further adieu, let’s get to the main point and check out the filming locations for the series.
The Last Of Us Filming Locations
The primary filming locations included Edmonton, Calgary, High River, and Canmore, all situated in Alberta, Canada. Here’s the complete list.
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
The Massachusetts State House, the next Fireflies safe house, was filmed at the Alberta Legislative Building in Edmonton. Also known as “the Ledge,” it is situated at 10800 97 Ave NW, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The deadly road scene in Boston, before the trio arrived at the flooded hotel, in Episode 2, was filmed near Rice Howard Way and Downtown Edmonton. The crew CGI’d most of the parts for the shot.
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Calgary has the biggest role in the filming of the entire series. Starting from Episode 1 Sarah’s after-school scenes were filmed near Lord Shaughnessy High School. To shoot the flyover scene in the second episode, they used the flyover near Memorial Drive and then CGI’d the scene.
Mount Royal University acted as the Biomedical Sciences Building in Episode 6. The crew prepared a set for the Boston Quarantine Zone at Calgary Film Centre. The dam that surprises Ellie is an actual dam in the city, named Horseshoe Falls Dam, which was built over a century ago and still works.
The mall in episode 7, about which Ellie dreams, is the Northland Village Mall in northwest Calgary. The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), situated at 301 16 Ave NW, Calgary, was used to portray the University of Eastern Colorado and the Vietnam scene.
High River, Alberta, Canada
High River also played a primary role in the filming of the series. The crew prepared Bill and Frank’s house in the Beachwood Estates in High River. Most of the scenes in the first episode were filmed in High River.
The highway using which Joel, Sarah, and Tommy thought of escaping the lockdown was filmed near Highway 2 in High River. The next restaurant scene with Joel and Sarah was also situated in High River.
Fort MacLeod, Alberta, Canada
The after-scenes of Sarah’s school, like the watch repair shop, the police cars moving with the sirens on, and people running toward their homes, were all filmed in the Fort Macleod area. The name Fort Macleod honors the name of the Police Commissioner Colonel James MacLeod.
Canmore, Alberta, Canada
The other important location was Canmore. It was used in the second half of the show. With a few edits and CGI on 8 Ave, the Wyoming settlement where Joel found Tommy was ready. The Bow River served as the location for the River Of Death scene.
The abandoned house where Joel and Ellie take shelter for episodes 7, and 8, was located in Okotoks, Alberta, Canada. The dining hall in the Jackson settlement was filmed at the Willow Lane Barn in Olds, Alberta.
The last episode is yet to come, but we believe that it too, would be somewhere in Alberta, or nearby. We hope you learned everything about the filming locations of The Last Of Us. Happy binging!
