Later in the chapter, we find out that Hoshizaki has fought countless times with Yumeoka. He has lost and won countless times; he can’t remember the number of times they fought. All he can say for certain is if he hadn’t given it all, he would have lost, and that is the reason why they have fought their hardest.
This was until one day when they realized that no other karate fighter could match them. His presence helped uplift him, but in fact, he was more to him than that. He was who Hoshizaki always wanted to be. They called each other their greatest rivals, but they now considered another friend. This was how they saw each other.
Later, we see that Hoshizaki goes to Yumeoka’s apartment when he knocks on the door, and he doesn’t reply. He says that he knows he is in there and requests him to open the door. When Hoshizaki finally meets him, he asks him the reason why he hasn’t joined the tournament and says that there is no point in attending the tournament that he is not a part of, and after winning last year, he ran. He is a coward.
When the scene shows who Teru is, we find out that he is no longer the guy he used to be but a big fat guy who says that he doesn’t care who wins and loses, and he has stopped practicing karate for a long time.
