The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Review: Plot Summary
The anime starts with one of our main characters, Fuyutsuki walking to her new company for the initiation ceremony while pondering how her life had been up to that point. Fuyutsuki’s peers had always perceived her as cool, calm, and collected, making her wonder whether it was because she was less easily moved than others.
Soon, Fuyutsuki catches a bit of snow only to come across a white-haired man whose feet are frozen in ice. A confused Fuyutsuki then asks him whether he is alright. The man then apologizes for worrying her while saying that today is his company initiation ceremony, but he got so nervous that his feet got frozen, and now he’s stuck.
Fuyutsuki is somewhat taken aback by this development, thinking about how frozen feet is a common phrase, but it’s her first time seeing someone getting their feet stuck in ice. Soon Fuyutsuki remembered that she had packed some hot tea. She then asks the man whether she should pour tea over the ice. Fuyutsuki then tries to thaw the ice with some hot tea, but to no avail, making her wonder just how nervous the man might be.
After thinking for some time, Fuyutsuki offers the man some tea with some kelp leaves. The man apologetically accepts, sharing tea and snacks while looking at some beautiful Sakura Blossoms. As a result, the ice thaws out and starts to crack. The man then starts talking about his love for spring while also revealing that he is the descendant of a Yuki Onna, and ice forms around him whenever he gets emotional. Due to being the descendant of a yuki-onna, people would usually think that he’d love winter, but the flowers and opportunities of spring mattered to him more than winter.
The man thanks Fuyutsuki for the tea, helps him calm himself, and then leaves. Fuyutsuki, running late for her company initiation ceremony, then leaves while pondering about her student days, where everyone would talk about her being calm while spreading rumors about her not having a lover. But her pondering gets interrupted by the memory of her meeting the white-haired man. She then expresses her amazement at meeting a new kind of person while also wondering if they’ll ever meet again.
The anime then shifts toward the perspective of the white-haired man named Himuro, heading to his company office while wondering how often his feet get frozen because of his nervousness. Still, it was the first time he had met someone so kind and gentle as Fuyutsuki.
Himuro then enters his office and goes on to find his assigned desk. While finding his desk, Himuro comes across Fuyutsuki once more. Fuyutsuki then addresses the coincidence while expressing her enthusiasm toward working as his colleague.
Blizzard forms around Himuro’s body because he feels delighted in meeting Fuyutsuki, deeming it nothing more than a miracle. One of their colleagues then notices the snow and comes over and reveals her tail and ears, Himuro and Fuyutsuki notice them.
The colleague then introduces herself as Komori, the descendant of the fox spirit; soon, another one of their colleagues comes and introduces himself as Saejima. Himuro and Komori then fidget around, wondering about their heritage, only for Fuyutsuki and Saejima to reveal that both of them are just normal humans.
The first day of their office ends, and Fuyutsuki and Himuro wonder how wonderful their day is. On their next day in the office, Fuyutsuki’s work is interrupted by a blizzard for Himuro. Fuyutsuki then notices the picture of flowers on Himuro’s desk and asks about his love for flowers.
Himuro then expresses how much he loves flowers while unable to go near them since they get covered in frost when he goes near them. Himuro then expresses his sadness by stating how much he loves flowers, but the flowers don’t love him back.
Fuyutsuki then spends her night searching for a way to allow Himuro to enjoy flowers while talking with her black pet cat named Nyamero. Fuyutsuki then presents Himuro with some bamboo straws stating that he can use them to prevent plants and flowers from being covered in frost.
Himuro then asks whether she had carried these straws from her home to work, only to present them to Himuro. Fuyutsuki then tells him she took the first train in the morning and had no problem carrying the straws to work. Fuyutsuki’s kindness overwhelms Himuro resulting in another blizzard throughout the office.
During lunch, Fuyutsuki is again interrupted by a blizzard produced by Himuro, who was absorbed into his smartphone. Himuro then shows her a picture of a cat on his phone. Himuro tells her he loves cats but can’t touch them since he might get too excited and freeze them. Fuyutsuki then tells him she also has a cat while showing him a picture of her cat Nyamero. Another blizzard starts as a result of Himuro wanting to pet Nyamero.
Fuyutsuki then presents Himuro with some cat whiskers that her pet cat shed. Fuyutsuki presents the whiskers to at least let him touch real cat whiskers since he cannot touch real cats. Fuyutsuki then tells him how cat whiskers are believed to be good luck charms and hopes that good things happen to Himuro.
Fuyutsuki then leaves after feeling a bit embarrassed about giving good luck charms to a man. Overcome by her thoughtfulness, Himuro starts another blizzard throughout the office. The next day, Himuro presents Fuyutsuki with a really popular dessert that he had spent an entire week finding.
A few weeks later, all of them are informed that they’d leave for Okinawa for a company trip. The news ends up being wonderful for everyone but Himuro. Komori then invites Fuyutsuki on a shopping trip with her to buy swimsuits for their trip to Okinawa; Fuyutsuki agrees to her offer and then finds Himuro, who has been sulking ever since the company trip was announced.
Fuyutsuki then asks Himuro the reason behind his worries, wondering that it might be due to Okinawa’s heat. Himuro dismisses her worries saying the heat is manageable for him since it’s spring season at this time. Himuro then reveals the problem is with his heart, worrying that he might freeze the entire beach after seeing its beauty. Fuyutsuki then gives Himuro a surf drum to help him get familiar with the sounds and prevent him from freezing the entire beach.
As a result, the first day of their company trip goes well and allows Himuro to enjoy the beach. However, the second of the trip comes with a really big problem, the heat. The weather report about the heat worries Himuro and makes him run out of his room to find ice or cold things to prevent him from melting.
Himuro reaches the general store only to find out that their freezer is out of order, preventing Himuro from getting any ice. Himuro then leaves the store to find ice elsewhere. Fuyutsuki and Komori then meet Saejima during breakfast and ask where Himuro is. Fuyutsuki then leaves to find Himuro after learning that he hurriedly left the hotel in the morning after finding out about the heat.
Fuyutsuki then finds Himuro tucked away in a corner with a child-like appearance. Himuro then tells her that he melts and reverts to his child-like form due to heat and that he left the hotel to find ice to prevent this from happening. Fuyutsuki then gives him a popsicle from their breakfast hall, and as a result, Himuro reverts to his original form. The anime follows their mundane life toward finding their love for each other.
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Review:
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague is an anime that delves into the comedy, slice-of-life, supernatural, and romance genres. The anime is simple while also being a great watch. The cast of The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague is spectacular and lovely; each has a unique personality and traits highlighted in their daily interactions throughout the episodes.
We have Himuro, the descendant of a Yuki Onna, who freezes everything around him when he’s overcome by emotion or builds an igloo whenever he’s feeling depressed or sad. Then we have Komori, the descendant of a fox spirit who sprouts out fluffy ears and a tail whenever she’s happy. Then we have Katori, the descendant of a phoenix whose entire gimmick is centered around forgetting something and getting something better, signifying the phoenix’s death and rebirth.
The comedy in this series isn’t like the typical comedy seen in other animes; the comedy in this anime won’t make you laugh, but it’ll make you smile. This anime’s comedy is well-done and doesn’t feel overbearing or over-the-top. The anime manages to blend comedy and seriousness wonderfully. Even though The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague is categorized as a comedy anime, it feels more like an iyashikei anime making the anime focus more heavily on the slice-of-life aspect.
This anime essentially follows the journey of Himuro and Fuyutsuki, opening up to other people while denying preconceived notions about them held by past peers that had been holding them back almost their entire lives. Fuyutsuki was perceived as a cold, calm, and stoic girl throughout her early life, preventing her from making friends and enjoying her youth.
Himuro had always sacrificed or kept his distance from many things in life, especially due to his lineage belonging to that of a yuki-onna, essentially preventing him from enjoying life due to the worries of him accidentally freezing everything around him.
Throughout the anime, Fuyutsuki and Himuro open up to each other and their colleagues and eventually turn their mundane lives into something they look forward to. The anime manages to do all this, giving interesting backgrounds to the side characters while developing the romance between Fuyutsuki and Himuro. But the romance is very different than the romance depicted in other animes. The main characters must overcome no love triangles or hurdles to join their loved ones. No rival character actively tries to take away the main love interest. So any anime fan wanting to watch a romance like that would be very disappointed.
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague is an adult romance but in a different manner. This anime takes a passive approach to developing the romance between the main characters, even though they both like each other. This essentially brings us to one of this anime’s weaknesses, and that is the sheer boringness of the anime. The anime serves well as a slice-of-life anime, but anyone wanting to see a romance anime will be utterly bored with this anime. But this series’s stunning animation makes this anime a good watch.
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Final Verdict
Overall, The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague is a decent slice-of-life, comedy and supernatural anime. It ends up entertaining even though it is not for everyone and is boring most of the time. Anyone wanting a slice-of-life anime should watch this, but anyone wanting romance anime should avoid it.
Our Rating: ⭐(3/5).
