The August edition of Hakusensha’s LaLa magazine revealed that Sorata Akiduki’s long-running manga series, Snow White with the Red Hair (Akagami no Shirayuki-hime in Japanese), will be taking a break. The return date and reason for the hiatus remain unknown, but the magazine promises to spill the beans on when the manga will make a comeback later on!
Penned by Sorata Akizuki, Snow White with the Red Hair has entertained readers for 17 years, since its debut in 2006. The manga has received praise for its impressive artwork, immersive story setting and strong-willed characters.
Taking us to a fairytale-inspired world, this series takes its own unique ‘Disney’ spin on the famous Snow White fairy-tale and brings us a story about an independent protagonist, Shirayuki, and her love story with a prince.
However, the recent news of the manga going on hiatus has left many fans questioning why the manga went on a break and when will it return. As we say a temporary bye-bye to Snow White with the Red hair, let’s dive into everything that kept the series running for so long.

About Snow White with the Red Hair
Standing tall among romance manga giants, Snow White with the Red Hair debuted in 2006 in Hakusensha’s bi-monthly shōjo manga magazine till 2011 before moving to the monthly LaLa magazine with 25 manga volumes published as of 2022.
An anime adaptation was inspired and the first half of the anime aired in Japan in 2015, followed by the second half in 2016. Funimation streams the series along with local Japanese networks like Tokyo MX and BS11.
The anime adaptation of Snow White with the Red Hair was directed by Masahiro Andō, while the script was written by Deko Akao and the character designs were handled by Kumiko Takahashi, bringing the lovable characters to life. The opening theme, Yasashii Kibou (Gentle Hope), was performed by Saori Hayami, and the ending theme, Kizuna ni Nosete (Carrying on the Bonds), was sung by Eyelis.
The Plot and Characters of the Series
Meet Shirayuki, our protagonist with bright red signature hair. She finds herself in a bit of a pickle when the Prince of Tanbarun desires her as his possession, but she refuses to marry against her will. She now finds herself lost in the woods, on the run from the Prince of Tanbarun, where she bumps into an unexpected ally, the prince of a neighbouring kingdom.
With his timely intervention, an adorable love story unfolds, intertwining the lives of a smitten prince and an extraordinary herbalist, as they navigate a world filled with romance, challenges, and self-discovery.
The characters include Shirayuki, voiced by Saori Hayami, who is the Snow White of this story. Seeking at-most independence, she runs away from the Prince wishing to marry her. Her characterizing red hair often turns heads and she hides it to shoo off attention. Zen Wisteria, voiced by Ryota Osaka, is the Prince who comes to Shirayuki’s rescue time and time again. He is the love interest in this story as he falls in love with Shirayuki.
Other characters include Mitsuhide Lowen voiced by Yuichiro Umehara, Kiki Seiran voiced by Kaori Nazuka and Obi voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto.
With three seasons of the anime adaptation and uncountable positive reviews, Snow White with the Red Hair seems to be an interesting watch. Based on the fairy-tale title, I would assume many arcs could be common and cliche but nevertheless, the story could deliver an endearing watch. If you are interested in streaming this series, then head over to Funimation and give it a try!
