“Boy’s Abyss” became a viral sensation for it’s dark and depressive storyline dealing with a lot of heavy topics like suicide, child abuse and emotional trauma. The manga is not happy by any stretch, with a lot of triggering topics coming over and over in the story, therefore readers should read it with caution. Boy’s Abyss sheds light on the ugly and forgotten side of humanity and people in general.
Boy’s Abyss is a psychological drama written and illustrated by Ryou Minenami. The manga tells the story about the life of a young boy named Reiji Kurose who lives on the countryside which is relatively small and uneventful. Reiji has only one dream which is to leave this place but deep down, he is aware that his dream will probably always remain a dream, with his emotionally manipulative mother, sick grandma and a shut-in brother weighing him down.
Reiji has quite the complicated and desolate life. Things aren’t any better at school, being bullied by Gen Minegishi, a local thug. Gen is oddly attached to Reiji and if possible, Gen wants Reiji to remain close to him for lifetime. Even so, Reiji has dreams about leaving one day with his friends Sukako Akiyama, who is unhappy with her life in this place as well. Reiji’s life takes an even more complicated turn when he meets Nagi Aoe.
Nagi Aoe was a member of the girl group “Acrylic” that Reiji liked to listen to from time to time. Reiji was shocked to find Aoe working at a convenience store out here in this unhappening countryside. Reiji’s encounter with Aoe leaves him spiraling down into a void of lies, betrayal, deception and dark secrets that should have remained buries. Will Reiji ever make it out of the place he detests the most?
Boy’s Abyss: Chapter 132 Recap
Previously in the manga, Gen confesses his love to Reiji and his desires to be a beautiful woman like Reiji’s mother Yuoko. Gen tells Reiji that he murdered Yuoko and dumped her body in the river, the place Yuoko wanted to be in her final moments. Reiji convinces Gen to turn himself in to the police, and that when Gen is finally released, Reiji would be waiting for him outside with open arms.
Reiji reminisced about his childhood and Yuoko’s hidden abuse. Reiji looks back at his past, thinking about his father’s abuse towards Reiji and Yuoko and how he felt sorry for Yuoko. Reiji only realized that Yuoko was a horrible mother after he met Nagi, and he looked back at those memory with disgust now. Reiji wakes up from a phone call from the police, telling him that they have found Yuoko.
Reiji goes over to the hospital as told by the police where the officer directs him to Yuoko. The officer tells him that a man on the other side of the shore saw Gen dump Yuoko in the river and that the man pulled her out and resuscitated her. Reiji is unhappy to see Yuoko alive, although hooked on to machine, asking her why she just wouldn’t die. On the other hand, we see Chako deal with her own difficulty.
Chako faced constant bullying from her classmates and people around her because she was chubby and stout. Chako in her delirious state thinks of how she always wanted to get out of the boonies but life didn’t really get better. Chako wakes up in the hospital, disappointed that she still didn’t die. Chako is dealing with her own depression and drowning herself in alcohol, as Reiji is dealing with his mother who is still alive.
