Akane-Banashi is a manga that is increasingly becoming a fan favorite nowadays. As such, there have been a lot of people who are looking forward to each new chapter of the manga. There are many reasons for Akane-Banashi’s rise, the first and foremost being its unique storyline.
It tells the story of a girl who’s out for vengeance, and she can achieve it by becoming a Rakugo Master. So just from this short intro, you get why we insist Akane-Banashi is a unique one. Written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue, Akane-Banashi have been in circulation in the Weekly Shōnen Jump since February 2022, and as of October 2022, the chapters have been compiled into three volumes. What is Akane-Banashi About?
Rakugo is the highly respected and traditional Japanese art of storytelling, where a single performer depicts a story to the audience by portraying each and every character in the story all by himself and distinguishing each character by different tones, pitch, hand movements, and he does all of this while sitting down.
Akane Osaki had admired her father all her life, who was a person passionate about Rakugo, and she was heartbroken when she heard that her father was expelled from Rakugo school. Her father, along with other applicants, were attempting to attain rakugo‘s third and highest rank of shin’uchi through the promotional test when they all got expelled from the Arakawa School of rakugo.
Six years into the future, we see that Akane still hasn’t given up rakugo, and in fact, she got even more passionate than before. She had been secretly studying rakugo under her father’s former master. Now that she has graduated high school, Akane thinks she’s ready and sets out to avenge her father by achieving her father’s broken dream of becoming a shin’uchi of the Arakawa School.

In the last chapter, we see that Akane has taken charge as the newbie Zenza under Shiguma Arakawa. Since Zenza is the very first step in becoming a Rakugoka master, she is at the top of the ladder right now.
Through her interaction with Guriko Arakawa, we know that her Zenza training is starting in all earnest with her performance training backstage. When she’s given an introduction to another Zenza whom she’ll be working with backstage, she never thought it would be Karashi Sanmeitei.
Although Karashi attempts to intimidate Akane by imposing his seniority, Akane is actually relieved to see Karashi as there’ll be at least one familiar face.
Karashi introduces Akane to the Yasaka-Tei Performance Hall. A place that, by Karashi’s explanation, is a real cultural heritage where all the great rakugokas in history developed their immense skills.
As the chapter reaches the end, Karashi takes Akane to Yasaka-Tei’s backstage, and she is introduced to two new faces. Tate and Asagao Konjakutei. Although both of them are Zenzas like Akane and Karashi, Asagao is the senior Zenza among them, and he is also the leader of all Zenza working backstage.
At the end of the chapter, we see Asagao completely flaunting his seniority to intimidate Akane. Will she be intimidated? Will this fuel a rivalry between Akane and Asagao? In order to answer these questions, we have to wait until the next chapter drops.
When is Akane-Banashi Chapter 33 Release Date?
The 33nd chapter of Akane-Banashi is scheduled to release on Sunday 9th October 2022.
As we saw the not-so-friendly introduction between the two in the last chapter, we might see a rivalry stemming between Akane and Asagao in the next chapter. Also, we will finally get to see Akane’s Zenza training starting in earnest.
