Riot Fest was founded in 2005 by Sean McKeough and Mike Petryshyn in Chicago. It started as a music festival for underdog bands that were not famous. The initial seven years were held in multi-venue the music festival over a period of three days on the weekend. The kinds of genre represented in the Riot Festival is metal, indie rock, punk, rock, psychobilly, ska, alternative, and skate punk. The bands which played in the initial years of the Riot years were Blue Meanies, Plow United, Chiodos, Jawbreaker, Naked Raygun, Articles of Faith, Wax, the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Replacement, and Misfits.
In its initial years, Riot Fest organized its festival in the indoor venues of the city of Chicago, like the Double Door in Wicker Park, Metro in Illinois, Cobra Lounge, the Congress Theater in Logan Square, and the Subterranean. But finally, in 2012, Riot Fest found an outside venue in Chicago: Humboldt Park. After organizing the festival in an outdoor venue, the festival was marketed as Riot Fest and Carnival, which offered games, food vendors, rides, and even wrestling.
Riot Fest, a new inaugural “Riot Fest Speaks,” in its 2014 edition of the music festival, was organized by Henry Rollins, featuring Greg Graffin, UCLA professor and Bad Religion vocalist Tim Mcllrath, Rise Against vocalist Micheal Petryshyn founder of Riot Fest, Marcelle Karp writer and activist and members of Russian protest and band named Pussy Riot. Over the conflict of Humboldt Park about its gentrification and lack of finance, the festival has been organized in Douglass Park on the West Side of Chicago since 2015.
