Veteran Journalist Geraldo Rivera Departs Fox News after Controversial Exit from “The Five”
The prominent figure at Fox News for over two decades, Geraldo Rivera, has recently announced his departure from the News network. He told his exit from the popular show “The Five” and shared more details through a video on social media. The video was filmed on a boat off Jones Beach’s coast and posted on Twitter.
The video showcases Rivera plainly stating that he was fired from “The Five” and decided to quit Fox News altogether. He also said that he would give more explanation on his decision to leave on the morning show “Fox & Friends.”
The 79-year-old journalist cited a “growing tension beyond editorial differences” as the underlying reason for his exit. Rivera had clarified that it was his personal decision to leave. However, he also emphasized that Fox News management should have sought to retain him. He appeared on the network for the last time on Friday, June 30. Rivera thanked for the opportunity and discussed the challenges of being the “odd man out” among the liberal hosts on “The Five.”
Rivera’s departure follows his recent contemplation of retirement, evidenced by a shirtless photo he shared on Twitter, captioned with “80-year-old contemplating retirement.” Despite his age, he emphasized his restless energy and desire to continue speaking out on issues important to the American people as long as there were willing listeners.
Joining Fox News in 2001, Rivera served in various roles, including war correspondent, weekend anchor, and host of the Fox Nation series “Cops: All Access.” However, his presence on the roundtable of “The Five” garnered him the largest audience.
River has been an official member of the show since 2022 and marked himself for his combative style while discussing current events, political matters, and pop culture news. His long and impressive broadcasting career also included stints at CNBC and ABC News and hosting his self-titled talk show from 1987 to 1998.
The departure news of Rivera from the show, followed by his exit from Fox News, occurred at the same time as the ongoing controversy, particularly involving his fellow co-host Greg Gutfeld. The tensions escalated in April when Rivera criticized Tucker Carlson after he departed from the network, labeling Carlson’s conspiracy theories about the January 6 Capitol attack as “bulls**t.”
This led to Gutfeld mocking Rivera on air, which further strained their relationship. He spoke about how he was suspended by Fox News several times, the most recent suspension being last month.
Though Rivera and Fox News seem to be on a rough patch, Fox News released a statement saying that they had discussed and reached an amicable conclusion and that his last appearance would be respected and celebrated.
Despite the controversies and clashes, Rivera conveyed his appreciation to the network’s staff during his final appearance, using the platform to highlight the importance of affirmative action in college admissions a day after a contentious Supreme Court decision impacted those programs.
Rivera’s departure from Fox News leaves a significant void after his lengthy and impactful tenure.
