In the previous chapter of Under the Oak Tree, Maxi gets uncomfortable after she watches the Knights spar, and she runs out feeling squeamish. Riftan follows after her and Agnes also arrives to ask her if she is feeling alright. The Knight explains that Maxi got uncomfortable after watching the Knights.

Riftan asks Maxi not to do anything that makes her feel that way. Agnes is curious if Maxi had never been to a jousting competition since most young ladies did, and Maxi’s sister was often seen there. Maxi lies to Agnes that her body is too frail to travel so much, so she never goes to the capital.

Agnes asks Maxi to come to the Capital for jousting competitions along with Riftan in the future, but Riftan refuses the offer.
