Well, the most awaited animated children’s movie titled Nimona was released in 2023 on Netflix though its Blue Sky Studio version got canceled. Based on ND Stevenson, the film adaptation of the webcomic was supposed to have the same storyline as the Netflix version.
The canceled version of Nimona was supposed to star Chloe Grace voicing the character of Nimona, the film’s protagonist and webcomic, and Riz Ahmed voicing the character of Blackheart. Nimona got canceled temporarily as it finally got its release on Netflix on 14 June 2023.
The unique thing about the unreleased movie was it would have been the first Disney movie that would have several same-sex kisses. The released film has been garnering attention from the viewers and has become extremely popular with the mouth publicity it has been doing.
After Nimona’s release, viewers were shocked to learn a movie this great almost didn’t make it to their screen. 20th Century Fox acquired the rights for Nimona and assigned Blue Studio Films to make the animation feature movie. Nimona is the story of a bubbly maniac shapeshifter Nimona joining hands with Ballister, a knight framed for murder.
The film follows Ballister, an ordinary man turned knight framed for the murder of Queen Valerinseeking help from the shapeshifter Nimona. It was ironic to Ballister’s initial decision of destroying and ending Nimona’s existence. After the movie was initially shelved by Disney and Blue Light Studios, the making was undertaken by Annapurna Pictures.
Rumors about the reason behind Disney canceling the movie being they were uncomfortable with the amount of open queer scenes in the film. The same-sex romance scenes made the people from Disney uncomfortable, thus postponing it several times.
The released version of Nimona has made a place for itself among the viewers’ hearts. The audience felt a connection with Ballister’s character as it has been a norm in society to pull the one different from themselves down. Nimona became home to Ballister after his initial struggle to prove his innocence failed.

Why Did Nimona Get Cancelled: Reason Revealed
Nimona was initially supposed to release on January 14, 2022, and was going to be based on the fantasy novel titled Nimona by Stevenson. Now, for the revelation of the main reason behind the cancellation of the feature film, it was the closing down of Blue Sky Studios.
Patrick Osborne was supposed to be the director of the canceled feature film, while Marc Haimes was supposed to write the film’s script. Nimona was canceled by Disney in the February of 2021 after it was 75% completed.
Blue Sky Studios failed to make enough money even with a successful film titled Spies In Disguise. Thus, it closed in the April of 2021. Disney has continued to maintain the rights of Blue Sky’s library and has continued to use them from time to time. It was also speculated that the film received pushback from Disney’s leadership due to the presence of LGBTQ content.
The central plot of Nimona was going to be based on same-sex kisses and LGBTQ elements. Until April 2022, the movie was shopped around by other film studios for its completion until it was picked by Annapurna Pictures. It was announced on April 11, 2022, that Netflix had picked up the rights for Nimona.
Some of the footage from the unreleased film got leaked on YouTube on July 14, 2021, which is no longer available. Nimon was supposed to be the first hybrid animated feature film by Blue Sky Studios. Before its cancellation by Disney, the movie was one of the most awaited feature films.
One of the anonymous ex-employee from Blue Sky Studios revealed that they were under pressure from the leaders of Disney to remove the queer elements from the movie. Disney stated they didn’t want to raise a weird atmosphere in the studio. The lead character of the movie was made gender-fluid to increase diversity in the film.
The completed movie has all the original queer elements with no changes or humor. The initial cancellation of the movie gained it huge backlash from the queer community as they stated they wanted the representation for the younger generation that they didn’t have growing up.
The ending of Nimona left the fans of the feature film and the fantasy novel in tears. During the ongoing controversy regarding the movie, Disney faced backlash for funding the backers of Florida’s controversial movement Don’t Say, Gay Bill. Disney is known for scraping elements of queerness and LGBTQ from the movies under itself.
