“Dear Child” (“Liebes Kind” in German) is a gripping psychological thriller inspired by Romy Housman’s acclaimed novel. This haunting tale delves into the chilling realm of real-life abductions and captivity experiences, deeply disturbing readers.
As Netflix continues to expand its vast catalog of original productions with regional variants, this German psychological thriller is not about easy-going topics; quite the opposite, it is about kidnapping, abuse, ransom, torture, and how the police fight the creeps that torment their victims.
The high-level talent of Northern European productions has been a good source of material for Netflix, whose leadership has had a knack for exploiting the cerebral, dark, extremely violent, and gory stories that come from Scandinavia and Northern Europe.
Not only are these sorts of shows extremely entertaining and have a big hook potential for audiences in the same fashion as Korean dramas have, but they have a unique style, aesthetics, and way of storytelling that separate them from other regional variants. So, before the premiere of Liebes Kind, let’s share a few details concerning this production.
Liebes Kind Preview
Liebes Kind tells the story of a woman named Lena, who was kidnapped and isolated with her two kids, Hannah and Jonathan. Their captor holds them in a cellar with a locked armored gate and forces them to do nasty stuff.
This is the stuff that makes the show loosely based on real nasty, true-life cases that are gut-wrenching, like the Natascha Kampusch and Wolfgang Přiklopil or the Amstetten horror case of Josef Fritzl.
In case those cases don’t sound familiar, you could check them out, but reader beware, they are nasty, and nasty is an understatement. Much like in the fashion of the aforementioned real-life cases, Lena escapes, setting off a police procedural investigation on the creep that held them captive.
