Fox Canceled 911 Series: Why?
The series premiered on January 3, 2018, and was renewed for the 6th season in 2022 that premiered on September 2022 and wasn’t renewed for the new season as it was canceled by the Fox network. The news of the cancelation of the series came as a shock to the viewers as it was well-loved series, and fans were looking forward to the release of the next season.
The reason behind the decision to cancel the series on Fox came down to ownership. The highest-rated scripted series came to a halt on Fox, only to be picked by ABC right off the bat due to the popularity of the series and fans wanting to see more of it. Fox has stated the highest-rated scripted series came with high-cost demand per episode.
The cost behind producing new episodes for the series came out to be 9-10 Million per episode, and the licensing cost also came out to be too high for FOX to justify keeping the series and issued a state thanking the cast and crew members of the series thanking them for creating an impactful series and wishing them the best for their future endeavors after the series concludes for the 6th season.
Even though 911 was canceled by Fox, its spin-off titled 911: Lone Star will continue airing on the FOX channel as it got renewed for the fifth season. The show was produced by 20th Television and was owned by Fox Corporation but not anymore. The series is now owned by Disney and has been moved to premiere on ABC for the 7th season.
The changes were made when the series first premiered a Disney-Fox merger was announced, but it needed to be completed. The series was made in-house by using the Fox network’s production company in 2018, but a year into airing the series, the merger ended. The end of the merger resulted in Searchlight Picture, and 20th Century Fox went to Disney while the Network stayed with Fox.
The end result was that Disney, through renamed 20th Television, was allowing the Fox Network to continue airing the series for a licensing fee. The fee model changed, and FOX not owning the series and buying it from outside companies increased the expenses drastically, leading to FOX making the decision to cancel the series.
In the end, the series wasn’t owned by the FOX Network, and the cost of continuing the series by the Network came out to be massive. The Network couldn’t justify spending that amount on the series and thus decided to let it go.
Even though the series has run its course on FOX Network, the fans don’t need to worry as they can still watch the 6 th seasons on the Network and then continue watching the series on ABC channel. The series will premiere the season 6th finale on May 15 before moving to ABC for the 7th season.
The President of Disney stated that thanks to the creative drive of the series’ creators, the series has been one of the most defining and original series on the Network, and we will be honored to continue bringing the series to the viewers through ABC with new thrilling storylines.
