It was on March 22, 1996, Dr. De had his ways parted with Death Row Records, which he co-founded with Marion “Suge” Knight back in 1991. After a year of establishment, Dr.Dre’s solo debut, “The Chronicles,” was a major hit and was atop of the charts for quite a brief period of time.
Many famous artists in the industry became part of the label, which included Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound, and Tupac Shakur were later signed to the label. But only a few months after Death Row signed Tupac in 1996, a contract disagreement caused Dr. Dre to part ways with the label. Why did Dr. Dre sue Death Row Records?
Dr. Dre left the label way back in the year 1996. It was a piece of very popular news back then, and the popular news publisher, Los Angeles Times, believed that Dre’s exit was due to a conflict between the rapper and the people who directed the business.
The conflict was ugly. However, nothing really happened back then as the two parties parted ways. However, about 2 decades later, Dre surprised everyone when he sued the label. He claimed that the label was unfair to him and he must be paid around 3 million in royalties for settlement of the cause.
It was believed by several news agencies and other sources that Dre was not paid his relevant and well-deserved bonus and other earnings by the popular label. This was mostly due to the fact that they had gone bankrupt. There were also speculations that the payments that Dre did receive, there were a lot of discrepancies in them, and the amount stated was not paid properly. If the magnitude of the legal suit is to be seen, it can be noted that Dr. Drre sought a total of around 3 million dollars in settlement. This would include all kinds of royalties and his fees as an artist.
How many times has Dr. Dre sued Death Row Records?
Dre has sued the Death Row Record multiple times and sought settlement over and over again. The Record did finally file for bankruptcy in the year 2006, following Dre’s persistent attitude and suing. The record pleaded that they had no money to give Dre and they had zero control over the matter. Their pleas were heard as the US judge did dismiss Dre’s plea for settlement.
Dre was still persistent, and he went after the label again in the year 2011. This time, however, the result of the lawsuit was completely different. The court did find the label guilty this time and believed that the label did not have the proper authority to distribute Dre’s albums. They did owe Dre a royalty, and that had to be paid. They also discovered that Dre was not paid the appropriate amount of money that he should have been paid. He was paid way less than the money the record earned by selling Dre’s albums, and hence it called for a settlement.
