Do you remember Superbad? The movie starring Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, and Emma Stone, is about two teenagers looking for alcohol and sex as they’re about to graduate high school. The same movie made the “I’m McLovin'” meme famous. Well, that movie was a great flick from 2007. It’s been years since that movie had its run, and the public is wondering if there are any possibilities for a sequel, so here’s what we know about the Superbad 2 release date.
The original Superbad movie is closely based on Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen’s life in Vancouver, Canada, during their teens. After its great success, producer Judd Apatow wanted to make a sequel that led the three main characters, Fogell, aka McLovin’, Evan, and Seth, to college. But the cast wasn’t as enthusiastic about this project.
Is Superbad 2 Happening?
Regrettably, Superbad 2 isn’t happening because scriptwriter Seth Rogen doesn’t want to write a sequel or a spin-off to the original Superbad. He considers that the first movie’s success was a one-hit wonder, and he doesn’t want to throw the dice and gamble upon a project he thinks might fail. For actor Michael Cera, he isn’t enthusiastic about a sequel either, he personally doesn’t like sequels and thinks that a standalone Superbad movie is just enough. The only enthusiastic cast member about a Superbad movie is Academy Award-winner Emma Stone, who feels that if the movie should come to fruition, she’d act in it without thinking about it twice.
For Judd Apatow, the movie’s producer wants to do the film, but without the central characters —and also scriptwriters— of the film absent, the movie simply doesn’t fall through. When the press asked Apatow what he thought if a second Superbad film flops at the box office, he simply replied with enthusiasm about it, saying “why do you think it will fail?”.
How Did Superbad Fare In The Box Office?
When initially released back in 2007, Superbad managed to rake in US$ 170 million against a US$ 17 million budget. In its debut weekend, it raked in US$ 33 million, and the week after, the movie grossed US$ 18 million. At the time, it was one of the highest-grossing high school comedies of its time, only to have 21 Jump Street break that record five years later.
Superbad 2 Release Date
To clear things out, Superbad 2 isn’t happening. Seth Rogen doesn’t want to write the script, Michael Cera doesn’t want to act in it, and the only two enthusiastic people about it are Apatow and Emma Stone. Do you feel like Superbad deserves a sequel? Or do you agree with the concurring thoughts of Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen concerning the film’s conclusion? Let us know in the comments.
