Netflix has become a favorite destination for all South Korean Drama and series fans globally. Over the past 2-3 years, Netflix has gained a good position among K-drama fans because of its exclusive short Korean series.

The series is not only exclusive, but the storyline, plot, cast, and aesthetics make it swoon-worthy. This year, Netflix also released quite a good number of Korean series, out of which Mask Girl took the most spotlight because of its global achievements. 

Directed by Kim Yong Hoon, Mask Girl tells a story about a girl who has craved attention since childhood, but as she grows up, her beauty fades, which becomes a stopper on her way to becoming famous.

However, behind the shadow of city light, she wears a mask and gains attention doing the broadcast live. In the parallel world of the internet, the timid and unappealing Mi Mo is the star. However, her insecurities, grudges, and inner turmoil turn her to take steps that lead her life only to her devastation. 

“Mask Girl” reaches #2 on Netflix’s Top 10

Mask Girl has had a good number of viewers since Netflix dropped the official poster and trailer of the series. Its popularity was more evident when it topped on charts globally.  Released on 18 August 2023 Netflix series “Mask Girl” made its position on Netflix’s Top 10 Series [Non-English TV] chart within 3 days of its release. It caused a stir in the whole Netflix Korean series dome. 

As per Netflix’s Top 10 website, “Mak Girl” has attracted over 7.4 million viewers in just a few days of its release and secured it’s its position in the chart of Netflix’s Top 10 Series [Non-English TV]. ” Mask Girl” has also topped in charts of a total of 72 countries, including South Korea, France, Egypt, Canada, Hong Kong, and others. 

Mask Girl: Plotline 

Mask Girl was adapted from the webtoon of the same name written by Maemi and illustrated by Hee Seo opens up with an introduction to the main character and ends with her devastation. 

Kim Mi Mo ordinary working woman who, since childhood always loved to get attention as a star. Her dream was to become a celebrity surrounded by spotlights only.

However, her looks get in the way of the fulfillment of her dream. His inferior complexity makes her choose a different path to get attention as an internet broadcaster. She takes up a mask and names herself ‘Mask Girl” and in no time becomes the hot search in the broadcasting world, hiding her true identity. The story takes a turn when she gets entangled with incidents that occur because of her internet broadcasting, which involves Joo Oh Nam, who is Kim Mo Mi’s coworker.

Joo Oh Nam is another disturbing and dark character, who feels inferior to others; just like Mo Mi, his only comfort is watching internet broadcasts. Joo Oh Nam discovers the face behind the “Mask Girl,” which makes his heart sway for Mo Mi. He also gets embroiled in the incident with Mo Mi. 

Mask Girl: Cast and Theme

The cast and the theme of the “Mask Girl” is the best element of this Netflix series. In this series, the main character, Kim Mo Mi aka Mask Girl, will be played by three different actresses, and their acting didn’t instigate fans even for a bit to find the loop. Played by Lee Han Byeol, Go Hyun Jung, and Nanathey portrayed the dark character Kim Mo Mi in all three perspectives.

Each episode of “Mask Girl” has a different protagonist, which makes it easier for the audiences to relate with the character, and therefore, the supporting characters are equally responsible for it being so popular. Ahn Jae Hong as Oh Nam Joo, Yeom Hye Ran as Kim Kyung Ja Shin Ye Seo as Kim Mi Mo and Han Jae Yi as Kim Chun Ae. 

Is “Mask Girl” worth watching?

If you are a fan of dark and mystery themes, then ” Mask Girl” is a perfect series to binge-watch. It can be disturbing in some scenes, but it is what makes it more special. Its shocking events and twists unfolding by the end of the episode will keep the viewers stuck to it till the end.
