What Is Title 42? How Is This Affecting So Many People’s Lives?
Suddenly, immigration has become a hot topic since the Joe Biden administration decided to lift the Trump-era public health restrictions on all those who were seeking asylum in America by sealing the U.S-Mexican borders. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made the announcement that it will lift Title 42 on May 23.
Since the announcement, it has created chaos in America. It has received mixed reviews from all around. Even Americans have mixed reviews about the whole issue. Republicans and even some Democrats are against the policy, and they think Brian Administration should take time before opening up the borders again.
Supporters of Trump’s Arab policy say the need for security should remain in place for now. As the pandemic spread in 2020, some officials pushed for international unity, but many countries, including the United States, responded to the crisis by closing their borders. Trump also claimed his administration would suspend all travel from Europe to the United States, and then the administration even announced a restrictive policy to close borders to asylum seekers.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDS, mentioned in title 42, prohibits entry to anyone crossing the borders of the United States for asylum or without authorization. Under the Trump administration, 83% of encounters with migrants at the border led to immediate deportation. At first, even Joe Biden decided to keep the policy running, but he decided to end it; Homeland Security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that since the implementation of the policy Title 42, there had been an unprecedented rise in crime and violence.
Human Rights groups are targeting Title 42 left and right and calling it heartless, and they interviewed thousands of families; they all confirmed that they have been kidnapped, raped, and attacked at gunpoint.
Meanwhile, some medical groups have also advocated ending the policy. The New England Journal of Medicine criticized the law as ineffective and cruel, highlighting travel between Mexico and the United States. The border is allowed for most of the pandemic unless you are an asylum seeker.
These exclusionary policies or practices were never based on sound public health. The government (Trump Administration) expects the end of the Title 42 policy to create a new surge in asylum seekers. The Department of Homeland Security is adding staff and buildings to handle the increased number of asylum seekers.
There will be an influx of people towards the border, and so the Biden Administration is doing a lot of work to plan for the contingency after the announcement to end the policy. Texas Governor is willing to provide for the asylum seekers.
The question is, between all the political rivalries and controversies, how is this policy going to play out for the people? People are anxious about the whole situation, although the government has promised its full support for the asylum seekers.
