K-pop originated in the year 1987. 1987 was a rampant political year that changed and led to South Korea’s democratization. In response to the increasing influence of western culture, during the late 80s and early 90s musical acts merged the elements of rap, rock, and jazz with the contemporary sounds of Korean music. Modern K-pop emerged in the ’90s when Seo Taiji and Boys released their breakout track “I know,” Which topped the Korean music chart for 17 weeks. Following the success of the Seo Taiji and boys, entertainment industries began recruiting young performers and provided them with intense idol training to meet the demands for new talents. This was the era that marked the k-pop boom. In the 2000s, Korean music, or K-pop, reached the international markets. Since then, it has been continuously growing with -pop bands such as Big Bang, Blackpink, BTS, TXT, and others.
