Carson Rowland is aware that Sweet Magnolias fans have a strong affinity for the connection shared between Ty and Annie. He perceives their “Jim and Pam” dynamic as a significant factor behind this adoration.
“The writers, they love this slow burn. And I think what they’re doing is turning the furnace on so gradually to get people’s excitement up like they did for the car crash in season 1, where it’s got all of this anticipation”, explained Carson Rowland, 25, during his exclusive interview with Us Weekly while promoting season 3 of the Netflix series, just before the SAG-AFTRA strike.
“And I love how the season ends with this subtle hint towards the relationship. And it’s a massive cliffhanger of the season. I think that’ll cause people to want to come back [for] more. Because what happens after that? Are they together? Are they not? We don’t know.
Ty and Annie in Sweet Magnolias until now and Rowland’s take on Ty
Ty (Rowland) and Annie (Anneliese Judge) have been friends since childhood, but their relationship has become more complex ever since Annie, being drunk confessed her feelings by kissing Ty during season 1. Initially, Ty didn’t share the same romantic feelings and even started dating Annie’s rival, CeCe (played by Harland Drum). However, as season 2 progressed, Ty’s own emotions began to change, and he started developing feelings for Annie.

In season 3, Annie has moved on and now has a new boyfriend named Jackson (played by Sam Ashby), while Ty finds himself dealing with a secret crush on her. Carson Rowland, who portrays Ty on screen, mentioned that he can personally “relate” to such situations in his own life and enjoyed bringing this complex dynamic to life on the show.
Carson Rowland shared his appreciation for the character development of Ty, stating, “I love how Ty is kind of getting a dose of his own medicine from season 1”. He acknowledged that Ty had a brief experience of it towards the end of season 2 after his breakup with CeCe, but in season 3, Ty fully finds himself in the position that Annie was in during season 1. Rowland believes this is a significant moment for Ty’s growth, as it allows him to recognize and understand the impact of his actions on Annie during the previous season.

In Season 3, Ty is longing for something more in his relationship with Annie, while Annie is preoccupied with keeping her romance with Jackson hidden from Ty’s parents. Initially, Ty tries to be a supportive friend by helping Annie in finding ways to be with her boyfriend secretly. However, as time passes on, Ty decides to take on a stand and sets boundaries. Through this, Annie comes to the realization that her secret relationship isn’t worth causing harm to the people she deeply cares about, including Ty.

Carson Rowland revealed the intricate dynamics between Annie and Ty in the show, explaining, “Annie is going through something, and she needs a friend, but Ty is really feeling drawn to her and I think on a subconscious level, Annie is being drawn to Ty as well. It’s like this electricity just being pulled together, like magnets almost”. Rowland further says, “And Anneliese and I sat down and discussed a lot of this and how we wanted the dynamics to feel and that’s exactly what we’re going for”.
The season finale reaches its peak with a dramatic and intense breakup between the characters, leading to a pivotal moment where Annie seeks comfort in Ty’s arms. This emotional scene will be cherished by devoted “TyAnnie” fans, and Carson credits this powerful impact to the outstanding performances of Judge and the writers.
