$100,000 Pyramid is back for another season of trivia, fun, and laughs on ABC on Sunday nights as the show steps in for the prime time slot while ABC’s top shows are on their regular summer break. This show has had its trajectory and several iterations across the years, it started all the way back in the 1960s with Dick Clark as the host, and the prize was initially 25 grand.
Now, the show has evolved, and so has inflation because if you compare that prize from the times of Dick Clark to the present day, and account for inflation you’ll see how much purchasing power the American currency lost. Still, that doesn’t make the game any less fun or interesting. We’ll present you with the details of this show right ahead.
$100,000 Pyramid Premise
Two teams of a celebrity and a contestant compete in rounds of giving verbal clues. Each round has six categories, and one person on each team has a certain amount of time to describe words or phrases from one category to their partner.
Points are given for every right answer, and each team takes a turn until all six categories have been played. If there is a tie, there is a round with words that start with a certain letter. The tiebreaker goes to the team that gets more points or gets all seven words right in less time.
After each round, the team with the most points moves on to the Winner’s Circle, which is a bonus round. The same thing happens again, but this time the celebrities switch teams.
There are also bonus spaces on the game board that give the players extra prizes. Over the years and in different versions of the show, these bonuses have changed. Some of them are the “Big 7,” “Mystery 7,” and “7-11,” which give extra points if all seven words in a category are guessed correctly.
In the Winner’s Circle round, one player has 60 seconds to tell their partner about six categories that get harder. A player can skip a category and come back to it when they have time.
There are some rules, like not using hand gestures or parts of keywords. If the contestant guesses all six categories correctly before time runs out, they win the top prize. If they don’t, they win money for each category they guess correctly.
