K-Pop is not just about music anymore. K-Pop music catches a lot of attention at first sight for its astounding visuals. As much importance singing holds, equally important are the dances. In fact, good dancing skills have helped in scouting the many K-Pop idols we know. Now, it’s a general opinion that people hold is that boy groups have the hardest choreographies. Boys are just naturally assumed to be more energetic and more capable to show great strength in dancing. But, behold, the girls are not much behind. In fact, some girl groups have equally powerful and difficult, if not more difficult choreographies than boy groups.
From having to dance in high heels to uncomfortable clothes, girl groups have to endure a lot. Also since people assume girls to be innately weaker than guys, they really need to read this list. Not only are these choreographies difficult, but also mind-boggling, and knee pain-inducing. In this piece, we’ll rake through some of the hardest girl group choreographies. Now, these don’t have any specific order, since I don’t think I am qualified enough to judge them. These are based on popular opinions of fans, and some are mine.
IZ*ONE – “Fiesta”
A group with 12 members, is surely is a challenge. IZ*ONE, formed through the survival show Produce 48 was an amazing girl group. The group was formed in 2018 and disbanded in 2021. The group’s choreographies were pretty difficult, and the synchronization among the members was mind-blowing. The hand movements and the unit formation within a performance is so much fun to watch. These girls never missed a beat and their performances looked absolutely flawless. Fans even called them girl version of the boy group ‘Seventeen’ who are known for their hard choreographies and killer synchronization as they are 13 members too.
Dreamcatcher – “You and I”
The 2017 girl group is known for its difficult but smooth choreographies. In fact Dreamcatcher and LOONA are some of the underrated groups that you need to watch out for giving out deadly performances.
If you watch You and I’s dance practice, you might shrug it off saying it’s easy, but believe me, its not. As smooth and easy that looks, it isn’t. You need the correct precision to pull those moves off or you might end up looking like a slender man. Apart from the visuals and great dance moves, the song is really nice to hear too.
EVERGLOW – “Dun Dun”
Anyone who has watched the dance practice video of this bop, know why is it here. Everglow is a 2019 girl group formed by Yuehua Entertainment. The girls are super talented, and they can pull off any concept effortlessly. The girls have managed to pull off both cute and dark concepts quite effortlessly. Lately, their badass side is getting a lot of compliments. Hence, their Dun Dun dance has made it to the list. The dance break featuring Mia gave me pain in my knees just by watching, I’m not even kidding.
Girls’ Generation – “Catch Me if You Can”
The forever evergreen and everyone’s favorite: Girls’ Generation. The popular 3rd gen group is known for its many charms and dancing was definitely one of them. K-Pop idols still cover Girls’ Generation’s iconic choreographies, that too both boy and girl group members. Many K-Pop idols perform the dances in variety shows, which explains how GG is still as relevant as it was 10 years ago. The SM girl group has given some of the biggest hits and their song Catch Me if You Can is no exception. It was a tough decision choosing this one, but this one wins since it has a powerful choreography when compared to other Girls’ Generation songs.
BLACKPINK – “BOOMBAYAH”
Who doesn’t know BLACKPINK at this point in time? They are inarguably the biggest girl group in the world at the moment. Though BLACKPINK’s choreographies are claimed to be similar and easy in nature, their debut song truly exuded power. The dance routine is extremely rigorous and fast and having tried that dance once, I can confirm it will leave you breathless. The girls really gave their all for their debut performance, but even after all allegations, the group always gives an iconic dance move to groove to. Cue: DU-DU-DU (aggressively shoots finger guns).
LOONA – “Butterfly”
Loona is probably one of the girl group which has the hardest choreographies and that’s on period. The supremely talented group of 12 members never fails to impress with both their music and their performances. LOONA posts dance covers of other groups too, and seeing them dance to Fire by BTS was what probably caught my eye the first time. No wonder, I had to look them up, and it was a great decision. The girl group is currently part of the survival show Queendom and is very popular among the audience for the killer performances that they put up every time.
After School- “First Love”
This song is iconic on many levels. The primary one is the dance form used in this one, which is quite rare for any group actually, not just K-Pop. The video features the members doing the pole dance, which I would like to remind looks very sensual but is extremely difficult to do. Pole dancing requires a tremendous amount of arm strength, and seeing the girls learn this dance form for just one video is something worth applauding. Since K-Pop girl groups usually have girl crush concepts, this was definitely way ahead of its time.
Red Velvet – “Be Natural”
Red Velvet is one of a kind and a fan favorite for all the right reasons. From great music to beautiful visuals, Red Velvet is the fail-proof recipe to success. They have played along with various concepts from the start, and Be Natural was probably their first try at a mature concept. A fun fact about this song is that NCT’s leader Taeyong has a cameo in this song, and for this reason, NCTzens know about this song more than ReVeluvs.
Every time you read the name of this song, a visual comes of Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy strutting and dancing in high heels. ON CHAIRS. The dance never fails to give me anxiety, especially when performed live. The choreography looks easy on the eyes, but it’s definitely not easy to dance. Given the fact that chairs are one of the most unstable things on earth, how does one dance with no takes in between, only Red Velvet can relate.
TWICE – “MORE & MORE”
TWICE is probably one of the most popular and most loved 3rd gen girl group. The girls became a part of TWICE through the survival show Sixteen. Along with chart-topping music, the girl group has one of the hardest choreographies ever. Their concepts are mostly cute, and the dances look very simple. But appearances can be deceiving, and it stands true for most of TWICE choreographies.
From “Likey” to “What is Love” to “Fancy”, TWICE has proved that cute charms require a lot more efforts, and they have always gone that extra mile for their performances. MORE & MORE is such a summer song with trippy visuals. With the girls in cute boho outfits, and the dance formation and fast hand movements, it looks amazing. But when you try doing the steps yourselves, you’ll realize it’s a lot of hard work.
ITZY – “WANNABE”
The list could never be complete without one heck of a monster 4th generation girl group ITZY’s mention. The girls have been serving visuals and great music since day 1. The choreographies of the group are usually fast-paced and are difficult to pull off with poise. Their 2020’s summer release is still very much popular, as fans cover this song a lot for their dance videos. With intricate dance moves which involve moving all body parts, ITZY just sets the bar too high for choreographies. Even their debut song “Dalla Dalla” has one of the hardest choreographies. But Wannabe’s dance break and individual dance portions take the win here.
These has been the hardest girl group choreographies. Don’t forget to check out their dance practices and channel your inner idol.
