The story is set in real-life history, during the reign of King Seongjong. The King has banished Queen Yiun because of persistent rumors that she is involved in political intrigue.
Since she was the mother of the Crown Prince, who would grow up to be Korea’s most repressive monarch, the King was first hesitant to have her killed. The palace wasted no time issuing instructions for the ousted queen’s murder.
The designated military leader was reluctant to take the initiative on his own. He hurt his horse on purpose, which caused him to fall off and hurt his leg. As a result, Seo Chun Soo was tasked with delivering the fatal dose.
Before finally succumbing to the poison, the Queen spat up blood into a handkerchief and cursed the individuals responsible for her death. Showing the power of a female heroine in a traditional environment, the series masterfully blends her culinary escapades with royal intrigue.
With its impressive cast and production values, “The King and I” transports viewers to the lavish Joseon royal court. “Jewel in the Palace” is a captivating and enjoyable drama because of its gorgeous cuisine sequences, compelling narrative, and well-developed characters.
1. Dong Yi (2010)
Dong Yi becomes a royal water maid after the deaths of her parents and brother. But the King, played by the formidable Ji Jin Hee, falls in love with her. He first poses as a judge to avoid raising suspicion, but the young woman’s intelligence, generosity, and humor ultimately win over the King.
He values the fact that, at first, she did not treat him any differently because of his royal status. Despite the fact that this impossible occurrence has never happened in real life, it serves as a major plot element in many Korean culture dramas.
When Dong Yi served as Choi Suk Bin at the Joseon royal court, she garnered both admirers and detractors. It was the birth of the King’s second son, King Yeongjo, who would cement her position in history as the grandma of Yi San and the father of Crown Prince Sado.
If you’re interested in learning more about this royal family line, their struggles, and their triumphs after watching Dong Yi, you may like the 2007-2008 Korean drama Yi San.
In order to watch all 77 episodes of that Korean drama, you’ll need to have a lot of time on your hands. Broadcasters in South Korea benefit from prolonging the airing of royal epic dramas because of their high viewership ratings.
Upon learning of Dong Yi’s sincere prayers for the queen’s health, Queen Inhyeon comes to see her as a trusted confidante, and later, Dong Yi satisfies Jang Hui Bin, a concubine who proves to be both ally and foe. Dong Yi’s singing talents have caught the attention of the court. The monarch’s untimely demise sets the stage for a power struggle in her kingdom.
2. The Red Sleeve (2021)
“The Red Sleeve” focuses mostly on his friendship with Sung Deok Im. I was reminded of Philippa Gregory’s “The White Queen” when I saw this play, even though it is based on a novel by Kang Mikang. Both include well-known actors in made-up roles.
The plot twist won’t be a surprise to movie buffs who have been keeping up with their favorite actors, directors, and screenwriters’ careers. Deok Im still believed Yi San to be the Crowned Prince’s instructor when they reconnected as adults despite Yi San’s deception.
Yi San fell for her because she was honest and forthright without trying to win him over. Despite being an excellent story element, the hidden identification arc was only effective for a few of episodes.
After learning Yi San’s actual identity, Deok Im vowed her undying devotion to him and promised to do whatever it took to help him become king. Their tense arguments would eventually give way to tender moments. This seems to be Lee Se Young’s first starring part in a historical drama, and she nailed it.
She convincingly portrayed the multifaceted Deok Im, who had several guises for the many people in her life. She was outgoing and courteous with her other court ladies, but she seemed timid and frightened before Crown Prince Yi San while being caustic and humorous with him when she mistook him for the royal tutor.
The ups and downs of her performance mirrored the ups and downs in her life. Deok Im’s assistance to Yi San occurred on several occasions. About halfway through the story, Deok Im alerted Prince Yi San of an impending assault, revealing the existence of a hidden society inside the palace.
To win the Queen’s favor, she also negotiated a settlement on behalf of Yi San with the previous monarch. However, owing to Prince Sado’s mental breakdown, Yi San also faced resistance from his relatives and other clans. They could not have a ruler who was the son of a madman. King Youngjo, his grandpa, ironically proved to be his greatest obstacle.
3. The King’s Doctor (2012)
In this Joseon dynasty drama, we watch as a veterinarian overcomes several challenges on his way to becoming the king’s personal physician. Baek Gwang Hyun, played by Cho Seung Woo, is destined to become the royal physician. His opponent in the contest is named Lee Sung Ha.
The female doctor involved in the triangle, Kang Ji Nyeong, has a photographic memory. Skilled acupuncturist Jang In Joo is interested in and knowledgeable about the history of Gwang Hyun. The main character of the play is a horse doctor, an outcast whose existence has less value than that of a wealthy man’s horse.
As an acupuncturist and holistic doctor, he excels. The plot was engaging, with Gwang Hyun overcoming obstacles despite hailing from a wealthy background. Ji Nyeong, on the other hand, conceals the fact that she comes from a wealthy family so that she might study medicine like everyone else.
Regarding Ji Nyeong, Sung Ha has always put her needs above his own. Gwang Hyun’s journey from an acupuncture-using prisoner who tried to save one of the horse doctors from a certain death to a human patient is remarkable.
He may not have much knowledge of the patient’s illnesses due to his lack of expertise, but he is smart, kind, and willing to learn. He won’t give up on trying to help them, even if he may anger the general public and the royal family. I admire his strength of character in the face of adversity.
It’s entertaining to see Kim So Eun play the part of the spoiled heiress who has feelings for Gwang Hyun. Princess Gwang Hyun is often reminded by the court lady that she should not marry Gwang Hyun due to his lower social status.
4. Empress Ki (2013)
At the beginning of the play, the underprivileged citizens of Goryeo presented young women as a form of homage to the prosperous Yuan Dynasty. Seung-Nyang, played by Ha Ji Won, was meant to be one of the condolences, but she and her mother escaped.
Tragically, her mother gave her life to protect her. Since treason is the punishment for disobedience, she assumes a male identity and leads a double life. Years later, she was leading a gang of men when she ran across her first love, the Goryeo crown prince, who kept pretending to look like a loser.
It wasn’t long before she was acting as both his spy and bodyguard. They struggled against the prime minister’s avarice and the illegal goods he was trafficking. After the death of the emperor of the Yuan Empire, his brother was banished to the country of Goryeo. The throne is just next to him.
His lack of maturity and timidity are glaring. He was sent away to die, but if it happens in Goryeo, the country will go to war. That’s why Goryeo’s new monarch has made it his mission to shield him from harm.
Then, a major event occurred. While the monarch of Goryeo was dethroned and Seung Nyang was made a slave, Togon was sent back to Yuan to be crowned. When her true identity was revealed, she was taken as a monument to Yuan. She traveled to Yuan with one purpose: to eliminate the Emperor.
From here, the aspiring empress of the Yuan Dynasty learned how to play diplomacy with the antagonists who were too thirsty for power, and her rise from enslavement to the throne began in earnest. She is torn between her first love and the emperor, whose love for her is the only thing keeping him alive, as well as between her homeland and her new realm.
5. The Flower in Prison (2016)
Hua Qiangu’s parents perished, leaving her an orphan who desperately has to study wizardry and martial arts to ensure her survival. After realizing that her great work ethic and generosity will lead her to a horrible end, she joins the immortal cult Chang Liu in search of solace and answers.
Chang Liu’s sect leader, Bai Zihua, accepts her as his only student. Qian Gu develops romantic emotions for her professor, but she keeps them bottled up until the very end of the story—the truth about her divine lineage and birth as Nü Wa’s offspring has emerged.
She called upon the Wicked God to save her master, and later, the God infused all of the demon’s might into her body, establishing her as the new demon overlord. Despite Zihua’s best efforts to shield her and alter her destiny, Qiangu is relentlessly tormented by the plots of those who want her demise.
ZLY, a real sweetheart, plays the part of Hua Qian Gu. She’s perfect for this part; she convincingly portrayed both Hua Qian Gu and the Demon God. ZLY is flawless in all parts, although most people preferred her performance as the Demon God. Besides the fact that she looks stunning in that outfit, it’s also refreshing to see her in a different kind of role.
There’s a lot of back-and-forth on the ‘net about who liked who better. As a result of Xiao Gu’s treatment of Bai Zihua, plenty of individuals have doubts about their romantic relationship.
Despite his clear belief that he shouldn’t, I get the sense that he loves her during those intense and magnificent moments of Xiao Gu’s retaliation, Bai Zihua’s forearm mark, and Xiao Gu’s death. That’s insufficient for a demi-god who’s spent millennia learning to control the feelings of people and looking for eternal life in God.
6. One and Only (2021)
Pyo In-sook, Kang Se-yeon, and Seong Mi-do were three severely ill women who became friends while staying at a hospice together and became even closer after participating in the murder of In-sook’s violent father, a neighbor of theirs.
The women conspired to protect In-sook when they concluded that she had murdered their violent father with Se-yeon’s husband’s golf club, even though the abusive father seemed to be dead after being struck by the golf club.
It was subsequently discovered that he had really been alive until the assassin Min Woo-cheon put a lovely flower on his ear. The police investigators Jo Shi-young and Hwang Ma-jin thought there was more to the case than just the flower, while the other detectives suspected that hitman Min Woo-cheon had slain the cruel father.
When Woo-cheon’s father tried suicide for his entire family, In-sook stepped in to rescue Woo-cheon. From that moment on, Woo-cheon and In-sook progressively fell in love with one another.
Woo-cheon and In-sook sought to look out for each other while they were both under police scrutiny. When the violent father regained consciousness, In-sook learned that his wife had choked him to death.
Ha San-ah, the eldest child of the violent father, had just reunited with her mother, and In-sook took the rap because she believed she did not have long to live. When a second man’s body was discovered with a flower in his ear, the investigation took a more complex turn.
Since the victim was a high-profile offender who had been granted early parole, the “murderer” was depicted as a villain. Woo-cheon and In-sook, who were in the same spot at the same time as the murder, couldn’t figure out what had happened.
7. Story of Yanxi Palace (2018)
In contrast to the openings of recent historical dramas, which essentially spliced together the most dramatic scenes from different episodes with the opening music playing in the background, this one is really original.
The opener is heavily symbolic and is composed of stills rather than moving footage from the various episodes. The final product is one of a kind, conveying the story’s themes and important events accurately.
While the theme song’s shrill Chinese operatic delivery may first offend, it really serves as a metaphor for the staged nature of the women’s daily existence in the palace. It’s refreshing to read a tale in which the queen isn’t the main villain but rather a sympathetic woman who isn’t afraid to exercise her authority when called for.
At first, it is irritating that she allowed Gao Guifei to walk all over her, considering that she was the Empress’ and the Emperor’s favorite. In harem plays, the empresses are either too nice to reign or up to no good.
Thankfully, the Empress eventually got it together and started acting like a ruler. She reveals to be no pushover, and she has no qualms about using her authority to shut up the boastful Gao Guifei.
The Emperor himself is a fascinating character. He paid more attention to his Empress and legitimate wife than to his concubines, warning them off with gifts.
Given that Emperor Qianlong was generally viewed as a good ruler who abdicated before his death so as not to disgrace his grandfather, Emperor Kangxi, and was known to remain devoted to the Empress until her death, this is scarcely shocking. There isn’t much of a love spark between him and Yingluo just yet.
8. Under the Power (2019)
The drama’s protagonists were the first thing I liked about it. Both Yuan Jin Xia and Lu Yi benefited much from their excellent rapport. Yuan Jin Xia wasn’t a pushover, even though she was very often harassed by Lu Yi. The young lady knew her stuff and had the ability to hold her own in a fight.
It was funny, and it’s always wonderful to watch her in action, so this was a double win. On the other hand, Lu Yi was attractive for no other reason. Because we’ve seen Ren Jia Lun play similar roles previously, he wasn’t very memorable. His historical plays, including Lu Yi, all use the same main actor.
People seem to like thinking of him as enigmatic and distant, so I suppose that works. Under the Embroidered Uniform is the official Chinese title of the drama.
Because his squad’s name, Jin Yi Wei, translates to “Embroidered Uniform Guard,” it’s easy to see that Lu Yi’s uniform is the inspiration for the name. The designers of the cast members’ uniforms and other costumes performed a terrific job.
Lu Yi made beautiful garments. The Jin Yi Wei costume they constructed for him is flawless. The visuals were stunning, and Ren Jia Lun is a perfect fit for the story. The storyline, on the other hand, was entirely expected.
The story’s eventual outcome was obvious from the get-go. A contentious dynamic between Yuan Jin Xia and Lu Yi was predictable, as was the involvement of Lu Yi’s father in Yuan Jin Xia’s backstory.
Obviously, this would put a strain on their relationship, leading one to withdraw in an attempt to avoid conflict and leaving the other to pick up the pieces.
9. Maiden Holmes (2020)
After following a suspected rapist, Su Ci shows up at a nightclub. As she explores the mansion, she comes across the chamber where Xiao Yan Zhi is frolicking with a group of young women.
After ignoring the inquisitive Xiao Yan Zhi, Su Ci locates her prey in the next room. Thousand-faced Man, a masked rapist, is driven out of the house and launches an assault on Su Ci and her guards.
As a result of Xiao Yan Zhi’s assistance, the rapist was apprehended. When Xiao Yan Zhi got back to his house, he found out that the money from the recent tragedy had been stolen. Xiao Yan Zhi resolves to do his own investigation to get to the bottom of things.
To get ready for his departure, he gives instructions to his soldiers and indicates that he will require an aide. He settles on Su Ci, whose previous investigative work had pleased him.
A member of the Mingjing Office’s staff. She is the only survivor of a family massacre. She assumes a male identity and joins the police force to uncover the truth about the murders that devastated her family.
Because of her superior intellect, analytical abilities, and great eye for detail, she is considered one of the best investigators in her department. In any case, the story’s setup isn’t exactly original.
Female protagonists dressed as men and breaking the rules is nothing new. The quality of the play, particularly the narrative, is really outstanding despite being headed by a rather youthful ensemble. When compared to other shows in the same genre.
10. The Autumn Ballad (2022)
In the first scene of the drama, our heroine, Qiu Yan, gets married. Dressed in all crimson, she is on her way to her husband’s family, the Hes. Her soon-to-be husband collapses and dies shortly before they are officially pronounced husband and wife.
They have stunned Qiu Yan and his family. The problem is that Qiu Yan’s family arranged her marriage without her knowledge, and now her husband’s family wants her dead so they may be together in death.
Qiu Yan has no desire to stay with the He family and, in the ensuing pandemonium, manages to flee. She is out and about when she runs across Liang Yi, Duke of Wei Yuan and head of a division known as Pi Chai Chu.
She begs him to assist her, but he refuses, having already deduced her true motives for fleeing. Nonetheless, Qiu Yan escapes home and, via a sequence of circumstances dependent on her intelligence, superior deductive powers, and the knowing the cooperation of Liang Yi, figures out how her groom-to-be died.
Qiu Yan and Liang Yi’s paths will cross again as they investigate other mysteries threatening the Empire’s stability once this one is resolved. Being the unwanted shu chu daughter of a scholar family is shown realistically in the program.
The lack of compassion shown to Qiu Yan by her own mother has badly harmed her relationship with her biological mother. The happiness of her son, Qiu Yan’s brother, is all that matters to Qiu Yan’s concubine mother.
In order to succeed at home, Qiu Yan had to have the capacity to maintain a heightened state of awareness and pay close attention to even the tiniest details. As a result of her formative experiences, she is now more independent and ready to pursue her ambitions front-on.
