George Maharis Passes Away At 94
Popular actor George Maharis has passed away. He was 94 years old. The actor is well. now for his role in the series, Route 66. The television world truly lost a true gem as several celebs took to social media to pay their tribute to the late actor.
The actor’s parents used to run a restaurant, and they wanted their son to join the family business. However, George had other plans as the recalled how growing up up in Hell’s Kitchen, at least for him, was all about that he is not going stay there as the actor believe that life is all about the journey, and he had to get out.
The actor’s caregiver and longtime friend, Marc Bahan has penned down a heartfelt post on Facebook remembering him as a great guy who would do anything for anyone while saying how he will be missed.
Why Did George Maharis Leave Route 66?
While George Maharis received huge fame after staring in Route 66, viewers were taken aback when the actor announced departure from the show. The role even earned Maharis an Emmy nomination in 1962 for his charismatic performance. However, the actor suddenly came down with hepatitis, and had to be hospitalised for a month as a result , he had to miss several episodes.
The writers on the show, had to change the storyline a bit as it was shown that Buz is in a Cleveland hospital while battling with an echo-virus. Meanwhile, Tod was accompanied by a a new traveling companion, named Lincoln Case( played by actor Glenn Corbett). However, the actor could not continue due to health issues that led to exhaustion. Although the actor briefly returned but soon suffereded a relapse. Mahar further recalled how his doctors said if he don’t get out now, he will soon be dead or will have permanent liver damage.
In an early interview of 1963, Maharis explained that he needed to protect his future and believed that if he kept going at the present pace, then he would be a fool. The actor explained that he can have $4,000,000 in the bank, but he cannot buy another liver. After the actor departed from the show, Route 66 reportedly lost the initial spark.
