After enduring three turbulent seasons with the New York Jets, quarterback Zach Wilson has been granted permission by the team to explore trade opportunities. While it was widely anticipated that Wilson would be moved this offseason, the identity of his next destination remains uncertain.
Despite being just 24 years old and selected as the second pick in the draft three years ago, Wilson may not command a robust trade market. His struggles with accuracy, injuries, and perceived leadership issues have marred his tenure in the NFL, with the Jets notably acquiring veteran Aaron Rodgers as a potential successor ahead of the 2023 season.
Jets owner Woody Johnson, speaking at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting, described Wilson as a “valuable asset” and emphasized that the team has no intention of simply releasing him. This suggests that there remains a possibility of Wilson remaining on the roster for the 2024 season.
Johnson also stressed the importance of Wilson finding a situation where he can “observe for a while,” expressing confidence that Wilson still possesses the potential to succeed in the NFL.
“He’s got the skill. He can do everything,” Johnson remarked. “There’s a reason we drafted him at No. 2 all around.”
As speculation swirls about Wilson’s future, several potential landing spots have emerged as contenders for his services.
Wilson faced unfair comparisons to Patrick Mahomes when he entered the NFL from BYU, but he could find no better mentor than the physically gifted youngster. Kansas City currently lacks a long-term backup for Mahomes, with Ian Book and Chris Oladokun listed behind him. Wilson would likely welcome the opportunity to learn under the guidance of Andy Reid, an offensive genius who could help him realize his full potential.
If there’s an ideal landing spot for an NFL quarterback, it might be in San Francisco under Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers have secured their new franchise quarterback in Brock Purdy and added Joshua Dobbs to the room, which already includes Brandon Allen. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that San Francisco has completely ruled out considering quarterbacks. Wilson has shown potential but may require additional support to develop further.
While Mike LaFleur and Wilson may not have been the closest during their time together in New York, reports suggest that LaFleur would be receptive to a potential reunion. Although there were arguments against Wilson becoming a Ram in 2024, there’s uncertainty about this. It ultimately rests with Sean McVay and Les Snead to make the decision.
In recent years, few teams have embraced the challenge of quarterback development like the Rams, making in-season moves for Baker Mayfield and Carson Wentz. Despite Matthew Stafford solidifying his position as the starter after a stellar 2023 season, the Rams might still consider adding a younger developmental option, even with the addition of Jimmy Garoppolo.
