Crunchyroll has announced the North American theatrical release date for Witch on the Holy Night, the upcoming anime fantasy film animated by acclaimed studio ufotable. The movie will open exclusively in theaters across the United States and Canada on January 29, 2027, with both Japanese-language screenings with English subtitles and an English dub planned for audiences.
The film adapts the 2012 visual novel of the same name, written by Kinoko Nasu and developed by TYPE-MOON. The project brings together two major names in Japanese animation and storytelling, with ufotable handling the animation after its celebrated work on Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and several TYPE-MOON productions.
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are distributing the film theatrically, while a newly released key visual and trailer provide a first major look at the adaptation. The release also marks another collaboration between TYPE-MOON and ufotable, following several acclaimed projects connected to the Fate universe and the Garden of sinners.
Witch on the Holy Night Story and Ufotable’s TYPE-MOON Connection
Witch on the Holy Night follows Aoko Aozaki, a seemingly ordinary high school student who is secretly training to become a Magician. She lives with Alice Kuonji, a mysterious witch, while working toward becoming a full-fledged Magician herself.
Aoko’s life changes when she encounters a boy, setting the events of the story in motion. The official synopsis describes the film as the beginning of one young girl’s story and the tale of a Witch, establishing a supernatural coming-of-age narrative within the modern world.
The film is based on Kinoko Nasu’s visual novel, which was released by TYPE-MOON in 2012. Nasu is also known for creating the Fate franchise, which began with the bestselling Fate/stay night visual novel before expanding into anime, manga, games, and theatrical films.
The partnership between TYPE-MOON and ufotable has already produced several major anime projects. Their previous collaborations include the Garden of sinners, Fate/Zero, Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works], and the Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel] theatrical trilogy.
Ufotable is also the animation studio behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, making its involvement in Witch on the Holy Night particularly significant for anime fans. The studio’s involvement is expected to bring the visual novel’s supernatural setting and magical conflicts to the big screen through its distinctive animation production.
The international rollout will begin before the North American release date. Witch on the Holy Night opens in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on January 21, followed by Austria, Germany, and German-speaking Switzerland on January 26. France, Belgium, and French-speaking Switzerland will receive the film on January 27.
Several additional markets are scheduled for January 28, including Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Central America, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Italian-speaking Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand. On January 29, the film expands to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Finland, Poland, Sweden, and India, while Spain and Kazakhstan are scheduled for February 5.
The theatrical release continues Crunchyroll’s growing role in bringing major anime films to international cinema audiences. The company has distributed successful anime releases including Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train, Suzume, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO, and One Piece Film: Red.
With Witch on the Holy Night, Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are once again taking a major anime property to theaters, while TYPE-MOON and ufotable reunite for a new adaptation.
