Wind Breaker Chapter 455: Recap
The chapter begins at Kaneshiro’s house. Kaneshiro and Jay Jo have a chat after finishing their race, and Kaneshiro says that she would’ve finished 12 seconds sooner if she didn’t smoke, which annoys Jay, who then asks her to shut up.
She then says that League of Street, Mahon Jo, and Kazuma are all connected, including their deaths. Jay gets baffled upon hearing this, and Kaneshiro continues by saying that her brother Kazuma Takeda and Jay’s uncle Mahon Jo, were the founders of the League of Street.
In the early 2000s, the Japanese Government issued an ordinance to decrease violence in the country. This ordinance affected the Yakuza as their power gradually declined. The Yakuza then started investing in racing sports to keep their organizations afloat, and thus with the use of online betting; cycling competitions evolved into a form of commercialization among gangsters.
Mahon Jo and Kazuma had different ideals as they wanted to create a cycling competition based on the dream of a pure ideal, and so they formed the League of Streets.
The focus then shifts from Kaneshiro and Jay Jo to Mahon Jo and Kazuma during their school life. Mahon Jo is seen as the most attentive in his classes and other activities, and his eyes sparkle every time someone mentions cycling, while Kazuma is seen as more relaxed. The teacher of the theory class explains the history of bicycling in Japan since the time of colonization.
The Teacher explains how gambling was introduced in the country to improve the economy, and it ended up becoming a huge part of the country. Bicycling became the ideal choice for betting, and so it attracted a lot of people’s attention.
Many people got into bicycling to earn more money via fundraisers as the better you perform, the more money you earn, but this also has its setbacks as one failure could take away all the funds from you and leave the person abandoned.
The teacher then tells everyone to race for money and not for dreams because only the truly skilled ones can reach the top. Kazuma then notices Mahon Jo pedaling the wrong way and so he explains to him the correct way.
Mahon Jo gets excited and asks a lot of questions to Kazum which makes him question his own decisions. Mahon Jo then gets back to training even though people laugh at him for his failed efforts and say that he’ll always be an E rank.
Only Kazuma notices how quickly Mahon Jo is improving and realizes what kind of monster he is. The day of the promotional race arrives, and Kazuma once again wins the competition of the upper ranks.
Then begins the lower-rank race, and Mahon Jo participates in it despite facing backlash from the audience. He remembers how he always felt suffocated due to his family’s high expectations, but all he ever wanted was to be free. Mahon Jo loses the race once again and sinks back to reality.
Kazuma approaches Mahon Jo after the race and motivates him to not give up over just one defeat. Some people approach Kazuma and tell him not to hang around with losers like Mahon Jo.
Kazuma gets angry and beats up those guys, and Mahon Jo joins him in the fight. They both get almost expelled but survive due to Kazuma’s ranking, and that’s how they become friends.
