Synopsis
In spite of her family’s objections, Chanshi, our protagonist, is a young, devout Jewish girl from Brooklyn, who decides to leave everything known to her and go to Israel soon before her wedding. Chanshi sets off on a wild and daring adventure to the Holy Land, but the shift from a life with a defined set of rules to a life with no rules at all is completely unexpected and leads her into a whirlwind of life experiences.
Chanshi is on the right path, just like the other young women in her Brooklyn-area observant Jewish community. She will play the role of the virtuous wife and give birth to at least six of his children even if he’s someone she hardly knows.
In essence, she is poised to transform into a walking uterus. Chanshi, in contrast to her peers, harbors a fantasy that decent religious ladies like her shouldn’t: Chanshi desires to engage in copious amounts of sex, but not with her future spouse but rather with Israeli troops.
She travels to Israel with the intention of surprising her best friend Noki, who is getting married soon. Once there, Chanshi lets go of her inhibitions and transform into the liberated, daring person she was always meant to be.
Inspiration behind Chanshi
Aleeza Chanowitz talked about the struggles of being an immigrant and Jewish woman being a major inspiration for the creation of Chanshi. She wanted to portray the hardships faced by women as they try and seek liberation from the hard and fast rules that restrict them from doing so.
In an interview, Aleeza claimed that the show was influenced by her own experiences as an immigrant and how the Israel she eventually settled in was far different from what she had anticipated. Aleeza experienced shame following her first personal connection because of her culture and religion, which were taboo subjects and left her feeling isolated.
Chanshi is humorous, but it also delves into the darker aspects of its character’s and Chanowitz’s attitude to sexuality, revealing trauma; a continuation of a vicious cycle, where as she goes from ‘prey’ to ‘predator'” through her sexual revolution and “wet dreams of Israeli troops.”
