According to a report by Yorozoo News, manga artist Aka Akasaka spoke openly at a recent talk event about his deep involvement in the Oshi no Ko anime adaptation process.
He indicated that he wants to participate extensively in all aspects of the production, including sitting in on the weekly voice acting sessions to provide direction and feedback to the voice cast regarding line delivery and interpretation.
He conveyed that the actors are quite receptive to incorporating his requests and input on getting the performance right.
Reflecting on his reaction when first hearing that his hugely popular Kaguya-sama manga would be adapted into an anime series, Akasaka admitted he was surprised by his own sense of calm and emotional restraint, given the excitement of the news.
He described gradually building anticipation rather than a sudden explosion of elation. By his account, he was overcome by profound happiness that he could not put into words, only a sustained joyful smile.
As for challenges posed by live-action adaptations of his work, Akasaka diplomatically declined to offer any specifics, joking that he had best avoid stirring up trouble on that front in the current social climate.
Oshi No Ko’s Creator On Protecting Manga Integrity
The recent passing of respected manga creator Hinako Ashihara has prompted wider discussion within the industry about protecting the integrity of one’s work during the adaptation process.
According to a Sponichi News report, notable figures like George Morikawa, creator of the popular Hajime no Ippo boxing manga, spoke out on the matter, only to face vitriolic attacks on social media.
This is undoubtedly a charged issue for Aka Akasaka to comment on as well, given that his hit series Oshi no Ko is itself being adapted into both an anime and two separate live-action productions.
While Akasaka has been closely involved on the creative side of the anime and live-action versions, his collaborator on the Oshi no Ko manga, artist Mengo Yokoyari, is unable to participate directly in the live-action due to her existing commitments.
The live-action adaptation, a joint effort between Amazon and Toei studios, is set for release this coming winter.
Why Oshi No Ko Is So Popular?
The anime series Oshi no Ko has rapidly gained immense popularity since its first episode aired, garnering praise from fans for its visually striking animation, unique and unpredictable storyline, and catchy musical score.
A core reason the show has resonated so strongly is its daring choice to explore the darker side of Japan’s idol industry, depicting the exploitation and abuse that can occur behind the glamorous scenes.
Centered around complex, flawed characters, Oshi no Ko sets itself apart from other anime by refusing to shy away from the uglier human truths in the pursuit of celebrity and stardom.
Yet the show’s bold thematic edge is not the only driver of its success. The production quality is superb across the board – stunning visuals, top-notch voice acting that brings nuanced emotional authenticity, and a beautifully cinematic soundtrack.
While Oshi no Ko subverts expectations of the bubbly idol genre to present a darker perspective, it captivates viewers by balancing its grim commentary with all the polish and creative flair expected of a hit anime.
Ultimately, the show has struck a chord through both its provocative examination of the idol industry as well its sheer stylistic brilliance and fresh approach.
The element of novelty and surprise seems key to explaining why this series has so rapidly built an enthusiastic fanbase eager to laud and analyze such a bold new anime vision.
