Netflix has released The Whisper Man, its new psychological crime thriller starring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan. Since the movie leaves viewers with several questions, many are already wondering whether The Whisper Man 2 could happen.
There is no official announcement from Netflix about a sequel. The movie is also based on Alex North’s 2019 standalone novel, which means there is no direct second Whisper Man novel waiting to be adapted.
The Whisper Man Was Designed as a Complete Story
James Ashcroft’s movie follows Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old son Jake is abducted. Tom turns to his estranged father Pete Willis, a retired detective who previously captured the serial killer known as the Whisper Man.
Robert De Niro plays Pete, while Adam Scott portrays Tom and Michelle Monaghan plays Detective Amanda Beck. Michael Keaton appears as imprisoned killer Frank Carter. Netflix confirms that the movie is based on North’s bestselling novel and is now available to stream.
The narrative is ultimately more focused on family relationships than simply another serial-killer mystery. The complicated relationships between Pete and Tom, Tom and Jake, and Frank and his son form much of the movie’s emotional foundation.
Why The Whisper Man 2 Would Be Difficult
Spoilers ahead for the ending of The Whisper Man. Pete sacrifices himself while trying to save Jake, giving Tom and his son a chance to escape. Francis Carter Jr. also meets a tragic fate when his father, Frank Carter, kills him in prison.
The ending brings Tom and Jake’s main journey to a close as they begin rebuilding their lives after the ordeal. Pete’s death also completes his redemption arc as he gives everything to protect his grandson.
That leaves Amanda Beck as one of the few characters who could potentially lead another story. Her connection to Frank and the letter she receives at the end could provide a starting point for a future thriller, although Netflix has not announced The Whisper Man 2.
Amanda Beck Could Return for Another Case
Detective Amanda Beck survives the events of the movie and could potentially become the focus of another investigation.
The ending leaves her with a letter from Frank Carter. Since Carter has demonstrated an ability to manipulate people from prison, this creates a possible route for another psychological crime story.
However, that does not necessarily mean Netflix is planning The Whisper Man 2. There is currently no confirmed sequel, and this unresolved element can also simply function as an unsettling final detail rather than a setup for another movie.
