The Sleeping Dogs movie is still moving forward, according to star and producer Simu Liu. The actor has offered a new update on the long-running video game adaptation, revealing that the production is currently working toward a deal with Square Enix.
Liu shared the update directly with a fan on X after being asked about the status of the project. He said the movie has a “very strong path forward” and confirmed that discussions with Square Enix are underway.
Sleeping Dogs Movie Has Director and Script
Liu is attached to star in and produce the adaptation of United Front Games’ 2012 open-world crime game. In December 2025, he announced that Timo Tjahjanto would direct the project, adding another major piece to the production.

The movie does not yet have a confirmed release date, but its development has progressed beyond the early concept stage. The project currently has a production company, director, writer, and script in place, with the Square Enix agreement representing an important remaining step.
The original Sleeping Dogs follows undercover police officer Wei Shen as he infiltrates Hong Kong’s criminal underworld. The game’s combination of martial arts, police drama and open-world crime storytelling has made it a popular candidate for a film adaptation.
Liu’s latest comments suggest the movie has not been abandoned despite its lengthy development. With the Square Enix deal being negotiated, fans may finally have reason to be optimistic about seeing Sleeping Dogs return in a new form.
