One of the most talented and popular singers, Lisa Lopes, lived a life full of artistic endeavors, personal growth, and affection for those closest to her. Lisa was born with a musical talent that was always a part of who she was. Her musical passion brought her peace, release from her thoughts, emotional support, and satisfaction. She was also popularly known as the Left eye.
Many of her fans are curious about why she was called Left Eye and who gave her this name. In this article, we will learn more about the singer and her career, as well as her achievements. We will then look at why she was called “Left Eye” and her cause of death.
Who is Lisa Lopes?
Rapper and singer Lisa Nicole Lopes was born and raised in the United States. Besides Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, as well as Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, she was a participant in the Rhythm and blues girl group TLC at one point in her career.
Lopes was one of the creative forces behind TLC, and as a result, she received more co-writing credits than the other group members, in addition to rapping and singing backing vocals on TLC recordings.
She was also responsible for designing the attire and orchestrating for the band, in addition to making contributions to the band’s image, album titles, artwork, and music videos. Lopes brought home four Grammy Awards thanks to her work with TLC.
During the brief period that Lopes was active as a solo artist, she was successful enough to have three singles reach the top ten in the United States: “Not Tonight,” “U Know What’s Up,” and “Never Be the Same Again.” The latter of these was a collaborative effort with Melanie C, a member of the British girl group “Spice Girls.”
Another girl group that she produced was called Blaque, and they were successful enough to earn a platinum album and 2 top 10 hits in the United States. The only other member of TLC who has ever released a solo record is Lopes.
Why was Lisa Lopes called Left Eye?
The singer and rapper were famous for rapping in a high-pitched voice and wearing various items under her left eye. She was also known for wearing eye makeup.
After receiving praise from her then-boyfriend, who may have been a member of New Edition named Michael Bivins, Lopes was re-named “Left Eye” after he told her that he was allured to her because of the size of her left eye in comparison to the size of her right eye. This event led to the rebranding of Lopes as “Left Eye.”
Because of this, long before Lisa Lopes was involved in the music industry, she was known by the nickname “Left Eye.” It was entirely appropriate for her to use that moniker as her stage name.
Lisa Lopes Career and Death
In 1998, Lopes organized the short-lived MTV show The Cut, which featured a competition between aspiring pop stars, rap artists, and rock bands. Left Eye Productions was founded by Lopes with the intention of spotting emerging artists.
One of the songs on which Lopes appeared as a featured rapper in 2000 was Melanie C of the Spice Girls’ “Never Be the Same Again,” which reached number one in 35 countries, including the UK. Lopes’s family let the public into the recording studio she built specifically for her solo work, UNI Studios, in 2008.
Lopes passed away in a car accident on April 25, 2002, while on vacation and filming a documentary about volunteerism in Honduras. Her car veered off the road, and she was thrown out. In May of 2007, VH1 aired a documentary titled “The Last Days of Left Eye.”
