Why Was The Beloved Children’s Animated Series Clarence Cancelled?
Spencer Rothbell, the voice actor behind the voice of everyone’s favorite 10-year-old character Clarence, confirmed via Twitter on April 4, 2017, about the cancellation of the series. Spencer stated the series will go off-air and won’t be renewed for a fourth season. This left the fans wondering about the reason behind the creators’ decision as the series received great views and was being loved by people and children.
Spencer wrote that there will always be ideas and routes they wished they would have been able to incorporate into the series, but the final season has some stellar episodes expanding on the series’ universe and its characters.
Clarence came into the limelight after a Cartoon Network employee, Emily Patridge, came out accusing Skyler Page, series creator, of sexually assaulting her. The accusations came after the series’ first season aired on Cartoon Network. Emily wrote Skyler about groping women without their consent. She also said she heard of Skyler’s quirky behavior but didn’t know he was a fucked-up person until he groped her.
She said she wouldn’t have allowed the creator to be anywhere near her if she knew he had a habit of sexually assaulting women. Another employee came forward after Emily and stated that Skyler was the reason behind his walking out of the series. He stated that Skyler was a piece of shit and that the network should have kicked him to the curb. The anonymous employee also said Emily was a badass chick for standing up against Skyler.
These allegations led to the network making the decision to fire Skyler from Clarence, and the series continued for a while without the creator. The reason behind the series getting canceled after the third season isn’t clear or revealed by the network, but one of the main reasons behind this decision can be viewership.
For any series to continue, there is a requirement for views as it is the reason behind generating revenue for the series. The viewership for the series may have decreased after continuous allegations against the creator of the series, which led to his departure. The interesting stories were a product of Skyler’s mind which changed after he departed from the series.
The creators continued for two seasons after the allegations against Skyler due to the demand and to give their fans closure from their favorite characters. Overall the reason could’ve been the series not doing as well as the network expected it to do after the success of the first season alongside the sexual assault allegations.
