Indian captain Virat Kohli announced that he will resign as the T20 captain for Indi. In his lengthy Instagram post, Kohli made it clear the real reason behind him stepping down.
The fans could not understand the logic behind the country’s most successful captain in red-ball cricket suddenly stepping down from his position.
The 33-year-old has always talked about giving importance to his family, and since he is now also the father of a young daughter, he might have wanted to take over the mental burden of captaincy off himself.
But why did Kohli leave the T20I captaincy before the T20 World Cup? What did the former India captain say at the time of the mega announcement?
Virat Kohli Explains Why He Left Captaincy
If we see it from the outside, there are a set of people that have their expectations of things, ‘Oops! How did it happen? Right now, we are shocked,’ this is what Kohli said on the RCB Podcast.
“You guys have nothing to be shocked about. This is something I already explained to everyone, and I said that I needed some space; not just that, I mentioned that I wanted to see how to manage my workload; well, that’s where the story ends.
You guys should know I keep my life simple and basic, so there is nothing. When it was time for me to make my decision, I went ahead to make my decision, and I made it known to everyone,” he added.
Still, about his decision, Kohli said, “I had no intention of sitting down to think it over and over again or contemplating about it for another year, no.
Of course, that wouldn’t do anything for me. Even the environment I am part of would do nothing. When it comes to quality of life, that is something important to me. Just as the quality of Cricket being something important to me.”
For some time now, you want to keep doing one thing every blessed day, and you want to do it many times as it pleases you. However, at the end of the day, quality is better than quantity. You see quantity in hard work, you see quality in execution,” he added.
Fans Reactions Alongside BCCI
Lots of people on social media are talking about Kohli’s time as the team captain. They’re sharing their thoughts about why he should keep being the captain. Interestingly, Kohli finished his time as the fourth-most successful captain in the history of Test cricket.
He has a record of 40 victories and 11 draws in 68 matches, all these while he was the captain of the team. Do you know he ranks third among all 28 Test captains who have led a team in forty or more matches when it comes to winning percentage (50%)?
“BCCI were not ready to see Virat Kohli leaving the Test captaincy. They said it was unexpected to them as well after the South Africa tour. As it stands right now, it is only Virat Kohli that can make it known why he left the captaincy.
However, it is useless to debate about this now because the young man had left the Test captaincy. After his decision, a new India captain had to be appointed by the selectors. That was the only option they had as of then. Sourav Ganguly disclosed this to Aaj Tak in an exclusive interview.
Ongoing Issues with BCCI
It is no secret that there have been some ongoing issues between Virat Kohli and BCCI in the last few months. The way Kohli was removed from the ODI captaincy became a national issue, where many experts and fans opining that the 33-year-old was mistreated by the board.
There were contradictory statements made by Kohli and BCCI on the whole issue, which revealed that there was indeed a communication gap between the two parties. The whole politics around the situation could have been a contributing factor in his stepping down as Test captain as well.
Even though we don’t have all the details, fans are just hoping that Kohli remains a powerful and skilled batsman for India. They want Indian cricket to keep improving and achieving greater success even after Kohli’s time as captain.
