Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s on-again, off-again relationship defined a generation of celebrity romances, but after nearly a decade of reconciliations, the two finally called it quits in early 2018.
Although the exact reasons for their final breakup were never publicly confirmed, multiple sources revealed that their relationship had become toxic and unsustainable.
The couple first started dating in 2010, capturing the hearts of millions with their young love and public displays of affection.

However, their relationship was anything but stable, marked by breakups, makeups, and third-party involvement over the years.

They dated other people during their breaks, with both having high-profile relationships before giving their romance another shot in late 2017.
By spring 2018, reports surfaced that their relationship was once again on the rocks.
According to a source, their “break [was] becoming a full-blown breakup,” and Justin was soon seen with other women—including model Baskin Champion.
A few months later, in July 2018, Bieber shocked fans by getting engaged to Hailey Baldwin, his ex-girlfriend and longtime friend.
While neither Gomez nor Bieber publicly detailed the reason for their final split, sources close to the couple confirmed that the relationship had been “complex and unhealthy.” An insider revealed,
“They haven’t spoken in months. She hasn’t been talking about him since they ended things again earlier this year. It was never a healthy situation for Selena and Justin… Their relationship was always very complex and complicated. It was just too much baggage.”
Gomez later seemed to address the emotional toll of their breakup through her 2019 music releases, Lose You to Love Me and Look at Her Now.

The lyrics of Lose You to Love Me painted a picture of heartbreak, self-discovery, and moving on, with lines like:
“I needed to lose you to find me… This dancing was killing me softly. I needed to hate you to love me.”

The song also hinted at Bieber’s quick transition into his engagement with Baldwin, with lyrics such as:
“In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy.”
Despite the heartbreak, both stars have since moved on with their lives. Bieber married Hailey Baldwin in September 2018, and the couple remains together.
Selena Gomez, on the other hand, focused on her music, mental health, and personal growth, embracing a new chapter in her life.
Their love story, once a symbol of young romance, ultimately became a cautionary tale about the challenges of fame, relationships, and personal well-being.
